A strong partnership between India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir is becoming one of the biggest reasons behind the team’s historic T20 World Cup 2026 triumph at home. After the title glory, Suryakumar Yadav recalled his first selection meeting with Gautam Gambhir.

After Rahul Dravid stepped down as India’s all-format head coach following the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, Gambhir took over the reins, while Suryakumar was named the T20I captain. Their partnership made the T20I side dominant both at home and away.

The skipper said that this made everything easy, and conversations mostly focused on improving the team, planning for future tournaments, and creating a positive environment inside the team.

Suryakumar Yadav was quoted as saying by PTI: “Out of 15 names we both suggested, 14 were common. That means the thinking was the same. When the goals are clear, there are no arguments, only discussions.”

Under Gambhir and Suryakumar’s leadership, India has yet to lose a T20I series. The Indian captain also revealed that he treats Gambhir like an elder brother, saying, "I still call him 'Gauti bhai.' It is like a younger brother and elder brother relationship.”

Batting is about 70-75 percent reaction: Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav is known around the world for his fearless and creative batting style. His ability to play shots in every direction makes him one of the most dangerous batters in T20 cricket.

The right-hander said, “I feel batting is about 70-75 percent reaction. The remaining 25 percent is instinct—what you decide to do in the moment. Once you enter the ground, you are almost on autopilot mode. You try to bat with rhythm and according to the situation.”

Interestingly, Suryakumar’s shot-making grabbed attention worldwide. As a young boy, he spent hours playing rubber-ball cricket in small streets and grounds. The uneven boundaries and tight spaces forced him to find new ways to score runs, and now, fans are just loving his hitting.

Surya reveals his fearless batting mindset

Even though his approach often looks risky, Suryakumar believes it is about staying brave rather than careless. He noted that players sometimes have to take bold chances in the modern game, and players who are ready to take smart risks when the situation demands it deliver the big moment.

Suryakumar signed off by saying, “There is a very thin line between being courageous and being reckless. I try to stay on the courageous side. But if the situation demands a high-risk shot, you have to take it. High rewards often require high-risk decisions.”
