Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene opened up about concerns over Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness following the Eliminator clash against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2025 season. Jayawardene stated that no serious issues were reported by the physios during the recent match.
Mumbai Indians kept their IPL 2025 campaign alive with a 20-run victory over Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Friday, May 30. MI defended a total of 228 runs and advanced to face Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the upcoming Qualifier 2 clash.
Mahela Jayawardene Opens Up on Suryakumar Yadav's Injury
Mahela Jayawardene was asked about Suryakumar Yadav's injury. The MI head coach said that minor issues like soreness or tightness are common due to the demanding schedule. However, he confirmed that his players would be available for the upcoming match.
"I think these are a few old souls that we get a bit of bandaging, a bit of time. And I saw boys getting it done, a few others as well," Jayawardene told reporters at the press conference.
"We know it's a tough schedule for us, but I think everyone's healthy, everyone's fit. And don't worry about those little tightnesses. I haven't heard anything from the physios. I'm pretty sure that even with one leg, these boys will be playing for us. Don't worry," he added.
Suryakumar Yadav Becomes First IPL Player to Achieve Major Record
Suryakumar Yadav continued his remarkable run in IPL 2025. He scored 33 runs off 20 balls, including one boundary and three sixes in the Eliminator. This was his 15th score of 25 or more in the season — the most by any batter in a single T20 tournament.
His consistency with the bat has been a key factor in the Mumbai Indians' campaign. After a slow start, MI bounced back to win eight out of 14 matches, securing a place in the playoffs. Yadav played a central role in that resurgence.
With a total of 673 runs, Suryakumar is the leading run-scorer for MI this season. He is currently second in the overall standings for most runs in IPL 2025. With at least one more match to play, he remains in contention for the Orange Cap.
Jasprit Bumrah Key to Mumbai Indians’ Successful Defense
Mumbai Indians chose to bat first and posted a total of 228 for 5 in their 20 overs. Rohit Sharma scored 81 off 50 balls, while Jonny Bairstow (47), Suryakumar Yadav (33), Tilak Varma (25), and Hardik Pandya (22) chipped in with valuable runs. R Sai Kishore and Prasidh Krishna each took two wickets.
In response, Trent Boult dismissed Shubman Gill for just 1 run in the first over. Sai Sudharsan kept the chase alive. Kusal Mendis scored 20 off 10 balls before being dismissed hit-wicket. Sudharsan then formed an 84-run partnership with Washington Sundar (48) during the run chase.
Jasprit Bumrah removed Sundar in the 14th over, shifting momentum back to Mumbai. Sudharsan was also dismissed for 80, leaving Gujarat at 170 for 4. Mumbai’s bowlers then restricted Gujarat to 208 for 6.
