The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, which is led by Ajit Agarkar, has finally lost its patience and has decided to sack Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain of the India National Cricket Team.

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain, Shreyas Iyer, who is also India's ODI vice-captain, has been zeroed in to replace Suryakumar Yadav as the new India T20I captain.

Why has Suryakumar Yadav been sacked?

According to a report in the Times of India, Suryakumar Yadav's lean patch with the bat for an extended period of time has led to his sacking as captain.

Hence, when the selection committee sits to pick squads for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, Suryakumar Yadav would not be the captain; instead, Shreyas Iyer will make a comeback to the side and take over the leadership duties.

The 35-year-old Suryakumar Yadav has been woefully out of form since becoming the captain of the Indian T20I team. Although he guided India to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 triumph in his last assignment, the selection committee is looking to move in a new direction before the next T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav was once regarded as the No.1 T20I batter in the world, and he ruled the ICC Rankings for a long period of time. However, once he took over leadership, there was a significant dip in his form.

Overall, in 52 matches as T20I captain, he scored just 1232 runs at an average of 28.65 and a strike rate of 154.96. He also went through a long phase where he was getting dismissed for single-digit scores.

Suryakumar Yadav is troubled by a wrist injury

Other than poor form and being on the wrong side of 30, Suryakumar's wrist injury is something that has been noticed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

As per the same TOI report, SKY "has been dodging a troubled wrist, playing through the accompanying pain and discomfort." Since the last IPL, he has been spotted with "a heavily taped right wrist and avoided exercises that exerted direct pressure."

Notably, this taping and padding became a regular sight during the T20 World Cup 2026, and he was seen taking help from Dr Rizwan Khan before his batting sessions, as the doctor would get him cotton pads and brown tapes to secure the wrist.

The T20 World Cup-winning captain has several times expressed his desire to represent India in the Olympics, but his dream might be shattered.

Why has Shreyas Iyer been chosen as the new India T20I captain?

Shreyas Iyer has not played T20I cricket for the India National Cricket Team since 2023, but his success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has forced the selection committee to make him the T20I skipper.

He has been in exceptional form while leading the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League. Last year, he took the team to the final while leading from the front.

Before that, he guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 triumph and also led Delhi Capitals to the final, becoming the only skipper to take three different teams to the IPL final.
