Veteran Team India cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to international action during the upcoming three-match series against Australia later this month. They haven’t played any competitive cricket since the IPL 2025 season, but recently underwent fitness tests to be available for selection and will play under Shubman Gill.
Virat and Rohit retired from T20Is and Tests and will now play only in ODIs for India. They will have limited exposure to international cricket ahead of the 2027 World Cup. The duo hasn't represented India since March 2025, following the Men in Blue’s impressive 2025 Champions Trophy campaign in Dubai.
Shubman Gill Likely To Become T20I Captain After T20 World Cup 2026
Shubman Gill was appointed as India’s ODI captain for the upcoming Australia series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to groom Gill as an all-format captain for Indian cricket in the coming decade.
According to a report by PTI, Shubman Gill is also expected to succeed Suryakumar Yadav as T20 captain following the World Cup in India. Meanwhile, the outcome of the tournament is considered less significant.
"Shubman Gill is also expected to take over the reins from Suryakumar Yadav after the T20 World Cup in India," the report read.
"Result of the tournament will be immaterial as is the case with Rohit's triumph as Champions Trophy skipper. The cumulative result of these three aspects is that Rohit Sharma's international career is nearing end," the report added.
Suryakumar Yadav Led India to the Asia Cup 2025 Title in the UAE
Suryakumar Yadav took over the T20I captaincy from Rohit Sharma last year. Under Rohit, Suryakumar had experienced key moments, including a memorable match-winning catch in the 2024 T20 World Cup final.
Suryakumar led India to their first trophy under his tenure by winning the Asia Cup. However, his individual batting performances were disappointing. He scored only 72 runs in six innings at an average of 18, with a best score of an unbeaten 47 in the group stage against Pakistan.
India have thrived under his leadership in T20Is, winning all six bilateral series while suffering just three defeats to Zimbabwe, South Africa, and England. The team will look to maintain this momentum during the upcoming tour of Australia.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Not Part of Long-Term Plans for 2027 World Cup
Indian cricket is undergoing a major transition under head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ended their T20I careers following India’s World Cup win in June 2024 and stepped away from Tests earlier this year.
On Saturday, October 4, Agarkar named Shubman Gill as India’s new ODI captain during the squad announcement for the Australia tour, with a former BCCI official jokingly referring to it as the “GA-AG order,” signaling a clear shift in direction.
According to a PTI report, Gambhir and Agarkar have already begun planning with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. They believe Rohit and Kohli may not be long-term options and have promoted Gill as part of the team’s future strategy.
