Team India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is set to play for the Mumbai state team under the leadership of Sarfaraz Khan in a domestic red ball tournament. Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed that he will play one match for the Mumbai team in this year’s All India Buchi Babu Invitation Cricket Tournament.

The 2024 Buchi Babu tournament is set to start on August 15 in Chennai. The matches will be played at four venues, Tirunelveli, Salem, Coimbatore, and Natham in Tamil Nadu. The Indian domestic cricket season will start with the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, and Test stars are likely to play in the event.

The tournament has failed to attract top players in recent years. Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Mohammad Azharuddin played in the event while leading the Indian team. Sourav Ganguly played in the Buchi Babu tournament during his comeback attempt in the mid-2000s after being dropped from the Indian team.

I Will Be Playing Buchi Babu Tournament - Suryakumar Yadav

On Saturday, August 3, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the squad for the Buchi Babu Tournament. Indian batters Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw, and Suryakumar weren't included in the squad. Rahane and Shaw failed to make it to the squad due to their commitments in County Cricket in England.

According to an Indian Express report, Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed that he will play one match for Mumbai in the upcoming Buchi Babu Invitational tournament. Suryakumar stated that this tournament would serve as good practice ahead of the domestic season.

“I will be playing Buchi Babu tournament. It will give me good practice session before the domestic seasons starts. I will join the team after 25th. I’m always available to play for Mumbai and club team when ever free,” Surya told the Indian Express.

Sarfaraz Khan will lead the Mumbai side in the upcoming tournament. Suryakumar, who has experience of leading the domestic giants in the past, will play as a player. SKY will play in Mumbai's match against Jammu & Kashmir in Salem from August 27.

Suryakumar Yadav Suggested That Sarfaraz Khan Should Continue To Lead

A source from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav will be included in the squad for the Buchi Babu tournament. The source stated that Suryakumar always turns up for Mumbai whenever possible.

“He has informed us that he is available to play in the Buchi Babu tournament and his name will be added to the Mumbai side. Surya has always turned up for Mumbai cricket whenever he is available. In fact, he is one of the few players who turn up for club matches in Mumbai maidaans,” a source in the MCA confirmed.

“We had asked Surya and he suggested that Sarfaraz should continue to lead and that he will play merely as a player,” a source added.

After the Sri Lanka series, many Indian team players will participate in the Duleep Trophy in September. The Men in Blue will play their next match against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series in September.
