Suryakumar Yadav set to play President Cup after Ranji Trophy setback
Suryakumar Yadav was omitted from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2026-27 squad, which came after the selectors decided to give preference to younger players who have been playing more red-ball cricket recently. After the setback, the senior batter has decided to start playing in the local President Cup.
This President Cup appearance will allow him to get valuable match practice and work on his batting rhythm and show his hunger for a return to first-class cricket. An Indian Express journalist posted on X: "A few days after Suryakumar Yadav’s name was omitted from Mumbai’s Ranji team. The batsman has decided to play the President Cup, which is club cricket in the city, this Sunday.”

The batter has also made his plans clear to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). It is being said that Suryakumar has informed MCA president Ajinkya Naik about his availability for Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy matches later in the upcoming season.
Suryakumar Yadav ignored MCA selectors' call?
Meanwhile, Suryakumar has been left out of Mumbai’s 16-member Ranji Trophy squad for their opening match against Chandigarh because of his absence from the team’s pre-season camp, as claimed by a Mumbai Cricket Association source.
Suryakumar did not join Mumbai’s pre-season preparations despite the invitation. The red-ball players have been training for around a month, with sessions taking place at the Cricket Club of India and the Mumbai Cricket Association’s BKC Ground.
The training continued on Tuesday as well. The selectors also reportedly tried to contact Suryakumar around 10 days before the squad was announced. However, the former Indian captain did not respond at that stage and made himself available only later. Amid this, How Abhishek Nayar helped Shreyas Iyer find his power and confidence.
Suryakumar Yadav dropped from Mumbai Ranji squad after missing pre-season camp
Mumbai’s selectors eventually decided that Suryakumar’s lack of recent red-ball cricket and his absence from the pre-season camp made it difficult to select him ahead of players who had been preparing with the team. The selection committee was reportedly unanimous in its decision.
They felt that including Suryakumar would have meant dropping a young player who had completed the full pre-season work, which they did not consider fair. He will now miss Mumbai’s first Ranji Trophy game against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium from October 11.
Notably, Suryakumar last played for India in a T20I against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in March this year. He lost the confidence of the national selectors because of his poor batting.
