Suryakumar was signed by the Mumbai Indians (MI) for ₹16.35 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. He was retained as the second highest-paid cricketer by the team. Jasprit Bumrah was the highest-paid cricketer for the Mumbai-based franchise after being retained for a whopping ₹18 crore.

Mumbai Indians had a disappointing IPL 2024 season, finishing last in the points table. The team managed to win only four out of their 14 league-stage matches.
