Syed Mushtaq Ali T20: Ajinkya Rahane To Lead Mumbai, Prithvi Shaw Named Vice-Captain

Senior batsman and India‘s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has been given the captaincy duties of the Mumbai team for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament, which will start on November 4.

Suryakumar Yadav led Mumbai in their previous campaign but since he will be with the national side for the T20 World Cup, Ajinkya Rahane will take over the duties. Young opener Prithvi Shaw, who captained Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final last season, has been named as Ajinkya Rahane’s deputy.

The Senior Selection Committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association selected a 20-man squad for the SMAT 2021. The Committee comprised chairman Salil Ankola, Gulam Parkar, Sunil More, Prasad Desai and Anand Yalvigi.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who recently put on some impressive performances for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2021, has also been named in the squad.

Mumbai had a forgettable last season in the SMAT. They managed just one win in 5 matches and finished at the bottom of the group.

Mumbai will face Karnataka in their first match on November 4.

Washington Sundar named in Tamil Nadu’s squad

Tamil Nadu, the defending champions, welcome back off-spinner Washington Sundar, who missed out from the Test series in England and the second chunk of the IPL 2021 due to a finger injury.

The tournament will be played at six centres – Lucknow, Guwahati, Baroda, Delhi, Haryana, and Vijayawada. The knockouts will be in Delhi from November 16 with the final slated for November 22.

Following the SMAT, Vijay Hazare Trophy 50-over competition will run from December 8 to 27. The BCCI has also planned to start the Ranji Trophy from January 13.
