The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee is expected to finalize India's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 by May 1. Players like Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, and Abhishek Sharma are unlikely to be selected for the ICC event in the West Indies and USA.
As the T20 World Cup nears, the competition for spots in India's squad intensifies. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 serves as a key platform for players to secure their selection. The selectors are closely observing players' performances in the ongoing prestigious tournament.
According to PTI, the selectors won't include inexperienced players in the T20 World Cup. However, there's a positive outlook for these emerging talents after the tournament. The young players are likely to get a chance in the national team for a bilateral series in the shorter format.
The report noted that the selection committee recognizes the performances of Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Harshit Rana. However, the selectors prefer to include them in bilateral series rather than putting them in high-stakes World T20 matches.
"The likes of Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Harshit Rana have all performed well but it is understood that the selection committee would like to follow the process of easing them in via bilateral cricket instead of putting them to test in a high-stakes World T20 game," the report read.
Following the T20 World Cup, India will engage in two white-ball series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. This will provide an opportunity for players like Parag and Mayank, along with other IPL performers.
Riyan Parag has been outstanding for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2024. The young batter has scored 318 runs in seven matches at an average of over 63 and a strike rate of 161.42. He's currently sixth in the list of leading run scorers. He has hit three fifties with the highest score of 84 runs.
Abhishek Sharma has displayed his explosive batting in the powerplay overs, scoring at a strike rate exceeding 200. Mayank Yadav has garnered attention with his raw pace. Mayank was awarded Player of the Match in his first two games before getting injured in his third match in the season.
Nitish Reddy Could Also Follow The Same Path - Report
The report highlighted that the BCCI is closely monitoring seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. Nitish Reddy, who previously represented India Emerging in Sri Lanka, is also in consideration for future selections.
"Nitish Reddy, who is a seam bowling all-rounder and was part of India Emerging side that toured Sri Lanka last year, could also follow the same path," the report further added.
Nitish Kumar Reddy has featured in four matches in the ongoing tournament. The all-rounder has scored 64 runs at an average of 57.50 and a strike rate of 159.72. He has taken three wickets at an economy rate of 10.33. He scored 37 runs and claimed two wickets against Delhi Capitals (DC).
