T20 World Cup 2024: Ireland World Cup squad announced, Paul Stirling to lead

Ireland, on Tuesday (May 7), announced their squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The marquee event is scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29 in the United States of America and the Caribbean.

Ireland are in Group A with former winners India and Pakistan, and co-hosts USA and Canada. Opening batsman Paul Stirling will be leading the Irish outfit in the T20 World Cup. Along with the T20 World Cup squad, Ireland have also announced their squad for the T20 series against Pakistan in Dublin and the Tri-Series with the Netherlands and Scotland in Voorburg.

The three squads feature the same 14 players. For the T20 World Cup, left-arm pacer Josh Little has been added to the T20 World Cup squad. Little is currently in India, plying his trade for Gujarat Titans in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024.

"We have an intensive block of T20 cricket coming up this month ahead of the T20 World Cup – we have seven games in 15 days as preparation for the tournament," said Ireland head coach Heinrich Malan.

"We will not be treating those seven games as warmups, though, we’ll be aiming to win as many of those games as possible.

"The squad is one that we have gradually developed and tested out over the last 18 or so months – the skill sets we need to cover are there, albeit we have allowed Josh [Little] to continue in the IPL until his side end their campaign, so he will likely join us ahead of the big tournament," he added.

Ireland will open their campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup against India on June 5 in New York. It will be followed by the game against Canada on June 7 before they take on USA and Pakistan on June 14 and 16 respectively.
