India captain Rohit Sharma is all set to retire from the T20Is after the T20 World Cup 2024. As per the reports in Danik Jagran, it is learned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants all-rounder Hardik Pandya to lead the team in the shortest format of the game going ahead.

With BCCI looking at Hardik Pandya as a future leader, it is learned that it prompted that made them pick the all-rounder in the team for the T20 World Cup 2024 despite poor form and also name him as vice-captain of the team. With Rohit Sharma, 37, being at the fag end of his career, the tides too are turning against him.

Rohit Sharma also hasn't been in the greatest of touch in the T20Is. After the T20 World Cup 2022, he didn't play a single game for India in the format as he was rested and BCCI provided opportunities to youngsters. In his absence, Hardik Pandya was given the responsibility to lead the team.

Rohit Sharma returned to the T20Is in the series against Afghanistan earlier this year. The opening batter didn't have a great outing in the first two games. But made a strong comeback in the third game and slammed a blistering century to take his team home and prove his worth.

Rohit Sharma was then named as the captain of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2024. He started IPL 2024 pretty well as he played some blistering innings and also racked up a century. But in the second half, his form has been the biggest cause of concern as he registered scores of 6, 8, 4, 11, 4 and 19 in the last few innings.

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya too has struggled to get going in the Indian Premier League.. The all-rounder has scored just 200 runs and has picked 11 wickets, which has been far from his best. But with him being seen as a potential leader to captain Team India, it remains to be seen how the move turns out for the BCCI.

Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar were not in favor of Hardik Pandya's selection for the T20 World Cup 2024

The reports also claimed that skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were not in favor of Hardik Pandya getting picked in the team for the T20 World Cup 2024. This is because the all-rounder looked in torrid touch in the ongoing Indian Premier League, struggling to get going.

However, both Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar succumbed to pressure from the top brass of BCCI as the top officials are looking up to Hardik as India's future captain.

The relationship between Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma hasn't been great ever since the all-rounder replaced the senior batter as the captain of Mumbai Indians. The all-rounder was traded from Gujarat Titans and then was handed the captaincy.

This came as a surprise because Rohit Sharma captained the team for 10 years and guided them to 5 title wins. Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians have looked poor and his captaincy was also discussed among the senior players of the team.
