Former India head coach Ravi Shastri lavished rich praise on Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill for his heroics in the game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He stated that players like him would walk into any XI and not getting a place in T20 World Cup 2024 would make him a better player.
Shubman Gill was amongst the unluckiest players to have missed out on the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2024. The opening batter since last year has been one of the best batters for the team in all three formats of the game and even in the Indian Premier League.
Shubman Gill, who scored around 900 runs in the IPL 2023, was named in the reserves for the tournament. The batter, however, replied to his omission in style as he slammed a magnificent century in the game against Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League and proved why he is rated highly.
Shubman Gill oozed his class with the bat against Chennai Super Kings and made sure that he helped his team win the game and stay alive in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The batter, who was going through a lean patch, played a stupendous innings of 104 off just 55 balls.
As Shubman Gill played a stupendous innings in the game against Chennai Super Kings, Ravi Shastri, who was commentating, pointed out that the batter would be hurt after missing out on a spot for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Ravi Shastri claimed that Shubman Gill should look at the positive side of that and take that into his stride. He believes that not making it into the Team for the World Cup will make him a better player. He explained:
"He (Gill) would be hurting. He should be hurting. He should look at it positively and try to get better. A player of his calibre would walk into any side, but such is the talent in India that he doesn't get a place.
"His class will continue to grow. He might not be in the World Cup side but he will take it in his stride. That will help him become a better player. He'll go from strength to strength."
When you've got 100k people supporting you, becomes easier - Shubman Gill after his ton
Shubman Gill opened up about his innings after Chennai Super Kings. He stated that crowd support allowed him to be free. He also talked about his 210-run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who also scored a century, and stated that they have a good camaraderie between them. He added:
"When you've got 100k people supporting you, becomes easier. Just the freeness of it. When we were batting out there, we didn't have any targets in mind. Were just maximising the opportunities in front of us. We have a good camaraderie between us. Even last year we batted a lot together.
"At one point we thought 250 was there for the taking. In the last 2-3 overs they bowled well also. Just had a feeling we were 10-15 short - not in terms of the match but in terms of the NRR going forward," he concluded.
