Bangladesh cricket has been witnessing the emergence of Tamim Iqbal in the cricket administration. The former cricketer, who was the captain of the Bangladesh cricket team as well, is now serving as the interim president of the board. Under the observation of the current government of Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal is appointed as the interim president, replacing Aminul Islam Bulbul.

During the regime of Aminul Islam Bulbul, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had a tense situation with India and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Now, BCB’s one of the major priorities is to restore its relationship with India.

Key Points

  • Tamim Iqbal admitted the previous BCB administration mishandled the T20 World Cup 2026 controversy.
  • The former Bangladesh captain said there was enough room to find a solution with the ICC.
  • Tamim Iqbal also claimed BCB and BCCI currently share a healthy relationship.
  • He backed the possibility of India and Bangladesh playing a cricket series in the future.

Tamim Iqbal replaces Aminul Islam Bulbul in the BCB

During a recent interview with the Indian Express, Tamim Iqbal talked about his vision as the head of the cricket board and what mistakes the BCB made when Bulbul was the president. Went against the BCCI and ICC’s decision was the major controversy during Bulbul’s era.

Citing safety and security concerns, BCB refused to send its team to India to play the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite receiving an ultimatum from the International Cricket Council, BCB remains firm on their decision, and as a result, ICC removed them from the tournament and named Scotland as the replacement.

Tamim blames the previous BCB officials for the T20 World Cup 2026 drama

“I was probably the first to speak out when the (T20) World Cup issue happened. What was done, and how it was handled by the previous Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) administration, was not right. The ICC was lenient; there was room to find a solution. We should have found it,” Tamim Iqbal said in the interview.

“Let me go back to 1996-97 — how much we fought to win that ICC trophy against Kenya just to qualify for the World Cup. My house was floating in coloured water. People celebrated in the streets. That celebration brought kids into cricket — everybody wanted to be Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Khaled Mashud, Akram Khan. And we gave away a World Cup without even having a proper dialogue. There might be players in that squad who will never play in a World Cup again. That I did not take nicely, he added.

I personally don’t think BCB and BCCI have any real issues anymore - Tamim comments on safety and security in India

Tamim claimed that he knows Mithun Manhas, the current president of BCCI, very well and shared the same dressing room in the IPL as well. While previous officials of BCB raised concerns over safety and security in India, Tamim Iqbal has no issue with India.

“Regarding BCCI — I have played a lot of cricket with (current BCCI president) Mithun Manhas. In the IPL, we were in the same team; he has come to Bangladesh many times to play in the Dhaka leagues. Very good rapport. I haven’t had the chance to sit with him in this capacity yet, but I know him well. The country’s security is absolutely brilliant at the moment,” he mentioned.

“When India comes here, the whole stadium is packed. People love that contest. I personally don’t think BCB and BCCI have any real issues anymore. A series here would be a great way to take the next step forward,” Tamim highlighted this in support of his comment.
