Hyderabad opener Tanmay Agarwal has said he is not eyeing Brian Lara’s historic 501-run knock after scoring a monumental triple-century in the ongoing Ranji Trophy game against Arunachal Pradesh.
On Friday (January 26), he created history by smashing the fastest triple-hundred in the history of first-class cricket. It took Tanmay Agarwal only 147 deliveries to complete his triple century. The record was previously held by South Africa’s Marco Marais who scored the triple-century in 191 deliveries during the game between Border and Western Province.
At the end of the day’s play, Tanmay Agarwal was unbeaten on 323 runs off just 160 balls. His monumental knock helped Hyderabad reach 529/1 in just 48 overs at the stumps. Earlier in the game, Hyderabad had bowled out Arunachal for just 172 runs inside 40 overs.
Tanmay Agarwal on breaking Brian Lara’s record:
Tanmay Agarwal’s brilliant knock was studded with 33 fours and 21 sixes. He shared a record stand of 449 with fellow opener Rahul Singh, who scored 185 off just 105 balls before being dismissed. Speaking about his knock, a delighted Tanmay Agarwal told PTI:
“I feel good and grateful. After I completed 150, I just started hitting and luck was in my favour. I always found middle of the bat and balls went out. I just kept batting and kept hitting.”
He further revealed that he had no idea about the fastest triple-century record when he was batting. He came to know about it only at the end of the day’s play as he disclosed: “After the end of the day’s play… From teammates to my family, everyone is very happy.”
“When you compare with Elite teams, this kind of feat is not possible, but I didn’t think about quality of opposition and kept playing the way I had to.
“The world record just happened. Nothing was planned. There were no plans that I would do this and that. It just happened,” he added.
Tanmay Agarwal now has the opportunity to score the highest-ever first-class score. The Indian record is held by BB Nimbalkar for his 443-run knock while the world record is held by Brian Lara for his 501-run knock. The Hyderabad star, however, is not eyeing any record as he said:
“No, I am not because I don’t know how much longer we will be batting on Saturday. As long as I bat tomorrow, I will try to play like I started the innings today. If it happens, it happens. I don’t have in mind that I have to achieve this or that.”
