How does The Hundred work?
Introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2021, The Hundred is a fast-paced format designed to finish a match in around two and a half hours.
Here are the key rules:
- Each innings consists of 100 balls.
- The team scoring the most runs wins.
- Bowlers can deliver five or ten consecutive balls, depending on the captain's choice.
- A bowler can bowl a maximum of 20 balls (equivalent to four traditional overs).
- Teams switch ends after every 10 balls instead of every over.
- Each innings includes a 25-ball Powerplay, during which only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
- Every bowling side receives a 90-second strategic timeout, during which the coach can enter the field to discuss tactics.
- A complete match generally lasts around 150 minutes.
Points System
Teams earn points based on the result of each match:
- Win: 4 points
- Tie: 2 points each
- No Result: 2 points each
- Loss: 0 points
The top three teams at the end of the league stage qualify for the playoffs.
