Winning the toss, England captain Harry Brook called to bat first, which was the right decision taken by the skipper, as the batters did well enough to register a total of 387 runs in 50 overs, powered by Ben Duckett's century and a 91-run knock by Jacob Bethell.
Joe Root and Jos Buttler also played their parts well through explosive knocks. The target looked far more than claimable when India walked into the middle to chase the runs.
On paper, the target was stiff, but not unchaseable. The Indian batting unit knew that they were capable of pulling something heroic if they managed to middle the ball.
Rohit Sharma was the star in the Indian batting order
Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma's 147-run partnership for the first wicket set the tone for the team's run chase. The England bowling unit got the breakthrough when Adil Rashid took Shubman Gill's wicket. Gill is gone for 77 runs from 84 balls.
India went very close to completing the run chase on a clinical note, but cut short by momentum when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 138 runs from 110 balls. Virat Kohli contributed well with his bat to carry on the momentum. As soon as Virat lost his wicket, the game was virtually over for the Men in Blue.
In the final three overs, India needed 60 runs to win, which proved more than enough for England to claim the match, as well as the series. It is now hard to say what the result of the match would have been if Rohit Sharma remained on the deck, or Virat Kohli or Shubman Gill were not dismissed earlier in the run chase.
The reality is cruel for the Indian cricket team. They will have to return home without winning any of the three series they played during their United Kingdom tour. Rohit Sharma did not leave his fans disappointed. He walked into the ground and left a masterclass behind.

Harry Brook praised openers Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett, who gave them the stage to put a massive total, and he was happy to have won two back-to-back series against the World No.1 side.
Harry Brook said, "[On England's series victory over the world's No. 1 ODI side] Extremely proud. I thought we fought hard. We communicated well like we did in the T20s and, yeah, we've managed to scrape away with a series win against the world number one."
