RPSG owner Sanjiv Goenka said his new franchise has to do the unfinished business of winning the IPL title. On Monday, BCCI announced the two successful bidders to acquire a team in IPL 2022- RPSG Ventures Ltd. – Lucknow (for INR 7,090 crores) and Irelia Company Pte Ltd (CVC Capital Partners) – Ahmedabad (for INR 5,625 crores).

The real intention is to build a team which can win the tournament: Sanjiv Goenka

Goenka previously owned Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), who had come along with Gujarat Lions for the period of 2016-17 when CSK and RR were serving their respective bans.

RPS, under the leadership of Steve Smith, reached the IPL final and narrowly lost to Mumbai Indians by one run.

Goenka said his new outfit would have the task to accomplish the unfinished business.

“This is just the beginning. The real intention is to build a team which can win the tournament. If you recall, Rising Pune Supergiant had lost the 2017 final to Mumbai Indians, so we have some unfinished business in the IPL,” Goenka told Times of India.

“What I eventually have to pay is the difference between what I get from BCCI by way of broadcast rights etc., and what I pay to them as license fees. Seen in that light, the figures are realistic. The BCCI conducted proceedings in a transparent manner,” he added.

The name for the franchise is yet to be decided: Sanjiv Goenka

Goenka’s new franchise would have the name of Lucknow, which can also be called as the most expensive team in the IPL history.

The 60-yer-old entrepreneur said that they are yet to decide on the name of the franchise and its strategy for the IPL 2022 auction.
