A struggling Jason Roy is under increasing pressure thanks to Alex Hales’ impressive performance in The Hundred and his open declaration of his desire to be called up to the England T20 World Cup squad.

Matthew Mott, the coach of England’s white-ball team, has acknowledged that Roy’s spot in the team is in jeopardy because of his summer’s poor T20I performance, which saw him score just 76 runs off of 98 balls. Roy has struggled for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, getting out for three ducks, a run every ten balls, and a run every seventeen balls in five innings.

Hales, in contrast, has scored 199 runs with a strike rate of 167.22 and an average of 39.80, including two half-centuries. The 33-year-old, however, has not played for England since 2019. Eoin Morgan had his say on the issue.

It Is About If The Team Wants Alex Hales In The Side: Eoin Morgan

“The one thing about Alex is his quality has never been a question,” Morgan told Sky Sports.

“It’s whether the team would like him in the side, or the captain can trust him, or the coach, or the selectors. I think I’m right in saying Rob Key said he is available for selection, so that means he goes into a pool of players with the likes of Will Jacks, Phil Salt, and Will Smeed, that sort of calibre of player”, Morgan added.

“I try and pick people on their ability as a cricketer really,” Nasser Hussain opined.

“He gets in that long line that Eoin mentioned of players now. It’s a bit easier for him now because obviously there is no Morgan, there is no Stokes in 50-over cricket. There are a couple of opportunities, but obviously, at the top of the order you do have Will Jacks, you do have Jason Roy, you do have Phil Salt, you do have Will Smeed. You can’t tell me from what we’ve seen in domestic franchises around the world that Alex Hales is not a serious cricketer.

“Try and pick your best side. But they may know something else. That inner core of senior players may not want him.”
