'They said, he's a bowler': Yograj Singh reveals how Yuvraj Singh saved Abhishek Sharma from PCA's fraud

Yograj Singh, former Indian cricketer and father of legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, has made a shocking claim about how young Abhishek Sharma’s cricketing career was almost ruined years ago by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA).
He revealed that when Yuvraj Singh asked the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and coaches for Abhishek Sharma’s records, they wrongly labelled him as just a bowler. But when the former Indian all-rounder forced the PCA to show the Indian batter’s stats and checked the numbers himself, he found that Abhishek had already scored a stunning 2400 runs across the formats.

Yograj Singh was quoted as saying by CricketNext, “When we asked about a list of Abhishek Sharma’s performances from the PCA and the coaches. Do you know what they said? Sir, he is a bowler. He bowls. Yuvi said, ‘You just look at his performance records.’ So, when we saw the record, Abhishek already had 2400 runs. Yuvi said, ‘Why are you giving wrong information? Why? This man has done 2400’. This was six or seven years ago.”
Yograj revealed that Yuvraj immediately shared those records with him, exposing how talent was being hidden out of jealousy. Yograj said this is the sad reality in India, that many young players’ dreams are shattered due to jealousy, but thankfully, his son saved Abhishek’s career.
Yograj added, “And when Yuvi sent that record to me, he said, ‘Papa, look at this player.’ I said, Look, this is all about sharing the information. This is the problem: some people want to finish the player out of jealousy instead of making their own career.”

He beautifully summed it up by saying that when a diamond lands in the hands of another diamond, referring to his legendary all-rounder, it turns into a Kohinoor, and that’s exactly what happened with Abhishek Sharma, who is now considered the next batting superstar for Team India.
Yuvraj’s father signed off by saying, “But then what happened? When the diamond lands into the hands of another diamond, what becomes of it? It turns into Kohinoor, and that's what happened with Abhishek Sharma. If this diamond had gone into the wrong hands of a spade, it would have broken and scattered. Many players in India broke and scattered.”

Yuvraj played a key role in shaping Abhishek’s career. The former World Cup winner supported the youngster and mentored him, and made him one of India’s brightest prospects. Even the Sunrisers Hyderabad opener, time and again, credited Yuvraj for whatever he has achieved so far in his career.
Abhishek Sharma yet to turn the heat on in the IPL 2025
The left-handed batter has had, so far, a mixed season with the SRH. He has so far amassed 232 runs in seven games for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2025. On the other hand, SRH is almost out of the playoffs race after losing five of their seven games so far in the tournament.
SRH will play their next IPL 2025 match against the Mumbai Indians on April 23 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
