Former India skipper Rohit Sharma produced a brilliant batting performance during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Saturday, October 25. Rohit, who faced criticism after failing in the first ODI, silenced the critics with back-to-back impressive performances.

After losing the toss, the Shubman Gill-led team bowled out Australia for 236 in 46.4 overs. Fast bowler Harshit Rana was the pick of the Indian bowlers with four wickets. Off-spinner Washington Sundar took two key dismissals, including Matt Renshaw and Matthew Short, to bring India back into the game.

Rohit raised his bat to acknowledge the applause from the Sydney crowd. He kept his helmet on but received a warm hug from Kohli. Head coach Gautam Gambhir also stood in ovation to celebrate Rohit’s achievement.

Rohit and Virat Kohli added a partnership of over 130 runs, putting the team in a strong position for victory. Kohli also scored a half-century, playing second fiddle at the other end.

Rohit cemented his legacy as one of the most prolific ODI openers, especially against Australia. He has scored nine centuries against the Aussies, equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record in the format.

Rohit Sharma Completed 50 Centuries in International Cricket

Rohit Sharma (33) is third behind Sachin Tendulkar (49) and Virat Kohli (51) in overall ODI hundreds. Notably, it was also his 50th international century across all formats, a milestone previously reached only by Tendulkar (100) and Kohli (82).

Earlier in the match, Rohit became just the second Indian to score 2,500 ODI runs against Australia, joining Tendulkar, who had 3,077 runs in 71 matches versus the Aussies.

Rohit also surpassed Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI runs by an Indian on Australian soil. Needing 83 runs to break Tendulkar’s previous record of 1,491 ODI runs in Australia, he achieved it with his commanding knock against the hosts.

Before the Australia series, there were questions around Rohit’s future and his participation in the 2027 World Cup. He began the series with just eight runs in the opener. However, he bounced back with 73 runs in the second ODI at Adelaide.
