Tim David is set to return to Australia’s one-day international setup as selectors assess his suitability for the team’s 2027 World Cup campaign. The 30-year-old batter is expected to feature in the three-match ODI series against England, which begins in Perth on November 13, as per CODE Sports.
David played his first domestic List A match since 2021 for Tasmania against Victoria on October 23. He scored 13 off 20 balls in the rain-affected One-Day Cup fixture, while coach Jeff Vaughan said the comeback was aimed at preparing him for the 2027 World Cup in Southern Africa.
Tim David's ODI Return Comes After Three-Year Absence
Tim David last represented Australia in ODIs during their 2023 tour of South Africa, where he managed only 45 runs across four innings. He subsequently missed the team's World Cup-winning campaign in India after stepping away from the format to focus on his Twenty20 career.
The right-handed batter came in at No. 6 against Victoria in Hobart after a rain interruption had pushed the required run rate beyond 10 runs per over.
He scored 13 runs from 20 deliveries, hitting one four and no sixes before getting caught. David did not bowl in the match, which Tasmania lost by 138 runs under the DLS method. Despite the modest outing, selectors are understood to have been considering him for the upcoming England series.
Tim David's England ODI Call-Up Could Boost Central Contract Hopes
An ODI selection could also give Tim David an opportunity to earn a Cricket Australia central contract upgrade for the 2026-27 period. Australia are not scheduled to play another T20I series until the second half of next year, with the team set to prioritise its Test commitments in the coming months.
Under Cricket Australia's contract points system, each white-ball international appearance earns players two points. They need to collect 12 points during the contract period to qualify for a guaranteed base contract, currently worth $360,645.
Tim David's recent recognition in the shortest format adds to his credentials. The Hobart Hurricanes batter was named Australia's T20 Player of the Year at the delayed Allan Border Medal ceremony in August. He has since turned his attention to securing a place in the ODI setup.
Jack Edwards Set for ODI Call-Up as Josh Inglis Faces Format Challenge
Australia are also expected to include New South Wales seam-bowling all-rounder Jack Edwards in their squad for the England series. Edwards impressed the selectors with his performance on ODI debut against South Africa and is in contention for a place in the upcoming squad.
The selectors are also expected to manage the workloads of players who feature across all three formats. Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis addressed the challenge after scoring a Test century at Newlands, admitting that balancing international commitments across formats can be difficult.
"It's tough playing all three forms, or at least being away for all three forms," Inglis said.
"I guess those conversations, they're always had between those three format players and Bails (selection chair George Bailey) and the selection committee and stuff. So those conversations will probably be had over the next couple of weeks in terms of what I need to prepare for the white ball series coming up, but then obviously the Test summer as well."
