Former Australia head coach Justin Langer wanted to change the batting style of Travis Head and asked him to work on his defense. The incident was revealed by former Australia captain Tim Paine in between the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Travis Head is usually a batter who likes to bat aggressively rather than batting in a traditional form of Test cricket. His attacking style has earned him plenty of success in his career so far. However, Langer wasn't convinced by this style of batting being successful for a long time.

The difference in opinion between Justin Langer and Travis Head

While speaking on SEN, Tim Paine opened up about the time when Justin Langer was Australia's head coach and Travis Head was still a young player in the team. Paine spoke about the difference in opinion between Head and Langer which was quite clearly evident.

“I don’t think either of them will mind me saying this, but I think he (Travis Head) and JL (Justin Langer) used to have a real difference of opinion. They were trying really hard for him to work on his defence and it wasn’t the way he wanted to go about it,” Paine said.

Further speaking on the topic, Paine revealed that Justin Langer wanted to work on Travis Head's defensive game and the latter too tried his best to impress his head coach since he was young. However, Head became successful with his attacking style rather than being defensive.

“But he was a young Test player who was trying to impress and trying to stay in the team, so he was trying to please a bit of everyone. I think that’s been the major shift in his output because he is sticking true to the way he wants to play," he added.

Travis Head will have lean patches: Tim Paine

Tim Paine also mentioned during the discussion that Travis Head will go through a lean patch at some time but he won't leave his aggressive batting style. He claimed that Head is currently enjoying the best time of his career.

“At times he’s going to fail and at times he’s gonna have lean patches, but he’s going to be super aggressive, he’s going to play his shots and he’s going to try and be a match-winner and we’re just seeing him blossom at the moment in all formats of the game,” the former Australia wicketkeeper said.

Travis Head's hundred leads Australia to a brilliant win

Travis Head recently played a match-winning knock of 140 on his home ground in Adelaide during the second Test against India. His counter-attacking knock came off just 141 balls as he smashed 17 fours and 4 sixes.

It was a blistering innings from a player who has been in superb form in all the formats for the past couple of years. Head's belligerent knock in Adelaide earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award. He will be expected to score heavily in the upcoming Tests as well.
