Young batter Tristan Stubbs narrowly avoided a freak dismissal during the second ODI between England and South Africa at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Thursday, September 4. The South African batter lost control of his bat, which nearly crashed into the stumps, leaving Saqib Mahmood shocked.
Stubbs arrived at the crease with South Africa in trouble at 93/3. The Proteas had collapsed after a strong start. He and Matthew Breetzke rescued the team. The pair frustrated England’s bowlers with a 147-run stand for the fourth wicket. Both batters reached their half-centuries and put the Proteas back on track.

Tristan Stubbs survived in the 31st over of South Africa’s innings when Saqib Mahmood’s delivery nearly led to a freak dismissal. The 25-year-old batter played a back-foot defensive shot but lost his grip on the bat, which flew out of his hands and landed dangerously close to the stumps.
Stubbs narrowly avoided dismissal as the ball and the bat missed the wicket by inches, and Mahmood, stunned by the bizarre escape, was seen holding his face in disbelief while commentators and fans reacted in shock.
The incident, which occurred with Stubbs batting on 16 off 28 balls, was captured on camera and quickly went viral on social media, with many calling it a “miraculous escape.”

Tristan Stubbs’ 58 Helps South Africa Post 330/8
South Africa posted a mammoth total of 330/8 in their 50 overs with contributions from all batters. Aiden Markram (49) and Ryan Rickelton (35) added a 73-run partnership for the opening wicket. However, captain Temba Bavuma perished for just 4.
Matthew Breetzke, who scored 85 runs off 77 balls with seven fours and three sixes, and Tristan Stubbs rescued the team after early wickets. Stubbs’ innings ended in a mix-up with Dewald Brevis, who played a quickfire 42 off 20 balls, while Corbin Bosch remained unbeaten on 32 to push the total past 330.
For England, Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Adil Rashid was the most economical, taking two wickets for 33 runs.
South Africa Clinches First ODI Series Win in England Since 1998
Chasing 331, England got off to a poor start as Jamie Smith perished on the very first ball. Joe Root scored 61 runs off 72 balls, and Jacob Bethell added 58 from 40 deliveries to keep England in contention.
Jos Buttler scored 51 off 51 balls, and Will Jacks contributed 39 from 33 balls, but regular wickets slowed the chase. Jofra Archer, who smashed 27 off 14 balls, almost brought England home, but they fell short by five runs, finishing 325/9.
Nandre Burger led the South Africa attack with 3 wickets, including Will Jacks, while Keshav Maharaj secured 2. The win was South Africa’s first ODI series victory in England since 1998. England had last won a bilateral ODI series against the Proteas in 2017.
