The heat in Chennai turned the IPL 2026 match between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) into a dramatic spectacle as Tristan Stubbs and Nitish Rana were boiling with anger over an umpire's call at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, April 11.

In a high-voltage chase against the Chennai Super Kings, the Delhi Capitals camp was left with frustration, anger, and a big controversy, with the hosts eventually winning the game by 23 runs.

In the middle of all this, Tristan Stubbs (60 runs off 38 balls) was trying his best to keep Delhi Capitals alive in the game. Along with him, David Miller (17) was also seen completely drained, even splashing water on his face during the break just to stay fresh in the extreme heat.

But the real drama broke out in the 19th over when the match reached the crucial stage. Stubbs, who was well set and fighting hard, asked for a glove change as it had become too wet to handle. This affected his grip and control of his shots when he was aiming to finish the game for DC.

Outside the boundary, Karun Nair was ready with a fresh pair of gloves. But the umpires stepped in and blocked the request, saying the change was not allowed at that moment, as it could slow down the match. This moment changed everything for the Capitals in Chennai.

Nitish Rana loses temper at the fourth umpire

Nitish Rana stepped in to speak with the fourth umpire, trying to explain that playing with soaked gloves in such conditions is extremely difficult and even unsafe. But the official didn’t change his decision. Even during the argument, Rana lost his cool at the umpire and used abusive language.

Stubbs continued anyway, showing great fight and determination. The South African all-rounder went on to score a fighting 60 and kept Delhi Capitals’ hopes alive till the very end. But just after the glove incident, things changed dramatically.

The visibly frustrated batter had a heated exchange with the umpire, and later he threw his bat near the steps and even hit his helmet in anger inside the dressing room.

The Delhi Capitals dugout also exploded, with Rana and head coach Hemang Badani visibly upset. They even had some angry words with the umpire.

What do the rules say?

The IPL rules say that the batter should be ready when the bowler starts running to bowl, and they are not allowed to change their equipment in the middle of an over if it slows down the game.
