The United Arab Emirates etched their name in the record books after the third and final T20I match against the Bangladesh national cricket team at home. Notably, the UAE secured their first-ever T20I bilateral series triumph over Bangladesh after the seven-wicket victory in the recent game.
After a tough start with a 27-run loss in the opening game, the United Arab Emirates made a strong comeback by winning the next two matches against Bangladesh. United Arab Emirates successfully chased down the target of 206 runs in the second T20I to level the series 1-1 before the third and final T20I match.
UAE Stun Bangladesh to Clinch Historic Series Win
In the series-deciding match, the United Arab Emirates elected to bowl first after winning the toss. Left-arm spinner Haider Ali dismantled the Tigers’ top order, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 7. Tanzid Hasan, who scored 40 runs off 18 balls, and Jaker Ali (41 off 34) helped Bangladesh reach 162/9.
Chasing the target, United Arab Emirates faced an early setback as skipper Muhammad Waseem was dismissed in the second over. Alishan Sharafu, who scored 68 off 47 balls, played confidently against Bangladesh’s bowling. Sharafu and Asif Khan forged an unbeaten 87-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
With Asif hitting two sixes in the penultimate over, UAE came closer to victory. Sharafu smashed the match-winning runs, securing a historic win and marking a memorable moment for the UAE cricket team.
Bangladesh Become First Test-Playing Nation to Lose Bilateral Series Against Two Different Associate Teams
Bangladesh have become the first Test-playing nation to suffer a bilateral series defeat to the UAE in any format. For the United Arab Emirates, it was their first major bilateral series victory.
This defeat has raised serious concerns about their preparation and form just months before the T20 World Cup 2026. It is worth mentioning that Bangladesh suffered a T20I series defeat to the USA before the T20 World Cup 2024.
Captain Muhammad Waseem played a pivotal role in the series triumph. He was the top scorer of the T20I series with 145 runs, including two crucial half-centuries. The UAE skipper earned the Player of the Series award, which he dedicated to his son.
I Am Very Happy That We Have Made History - Muhammad Waseem
UAE captain Muhammad Waseem expressed immense pride and joy following his team's historic series win over Bangladesh. He added that the team never lost hope and felt comfortable playing in familiar conditions.
"Very happy with this victory, congrats to our staff, management and board. I am very happy that we have made history. This series means a lot, happy with the way our boys played, have no words for this victory," Waseem said in the post-match press conference.
"The uncapped players coming in did really well. Haider Ali was exceptional on debut, he bowled very nicely. To be honest, we didn't lose our hopes. We are used to playing in these conditions. Very happy. First time I am receiving this trophy, I want to dedicate this award to my son," he added.
