T Natarajan replaces Umesh Yadav for the last two Test matches

Umesh Yadav, 33, has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series against Australia with a strained calf muscle, He limped off the field after bowling 3.3 overs and picking Joe Burns’ wicket in the second innings of the second Test at the MCG.

Umesh’s injury comes as a massive blow to the Indian team, who are already missing Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. Yadav has bowled brilliantly at times in the two Tests,  complementing Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin by keeping Australia’s run rate in check.

T Natarajan has been named as Umesh’s replacement for the remaining two Tests. The career of Natarajan keeps getting better and better in the recent past. After impressing everyone with his death bowling skills in the IPL – Natarajan bowled most yorkers in the IPL – the left-arm pacer was drafted in India’s limited-overs tour to Australia as a replacement for the injured Varun Chakravarthy.

He was so good that Hardik Pandya handed his Man of the Series award in the T20I series to the pacer from Tamil Nadu. Natarajan was asked to stay with the team as a net bowler for the Test series in order to give batting practice to the batters that would help them prepare for the left-arm angle of Mitchell Starc.

Now, the 29-year-old is added to the Test squad as well. It wouldn’t be farfetched to think that Natrajan’s confidence and the left-arm variety in the bowling attack could prompt the management to include him in the eleven for the third Test. Although, the likes of Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur were already part of the squad. Natarajan has played 20 first-class matches for Tamil Nadu and taken 64 wickets at 27.03.
