The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) awarded a fast-bowling contract to five bowlers, including Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umran Malik. The board granted Umran Malik a central contract, with an eye on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia.
Indian cricket’s fast bowling attack is under close observation by national selectors, with five players recently awarded fast bowling contracts by the BCCI. Among the recipients are Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vishak, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal, and Vidwath Kawerappa.
Umran Malik To Be Picked For India A Ahead Of BGT Series
The national selectors want to fast-track him to the squad for the upcoming tour in Australia. Umran Malik might experience Australian conditions firsthand in an upcoming shadow tour preceding the Border-Gavaskar Trophy contest set to commence in December.
Selectors recommended the Jammu and Kashmir team management provide Umran Malik with ample playing opportunities during the current Ranji season, allowing him to adapt to bowling extended spells. Malik played in five Ranji matches, a significant increase compared to his previous appearances of one match last year and two matches the year before.
In the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season, Malik managed to secure only four wickets at a disappointing average of 38.50. The three home matches he played in were heavily affected by the weather. He bowled 26 overs across two innings against Odisha in Cuttack.
“What he has is rare ability. He will develop other skills with time but what is currently expected of him is to consistently bowl fast and build long spells,” a BCCI official said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
With the BCCI prioritizing Test cricket, efforts are underway to develop a pool of fast bowlers. India aims for a third consecutive Test series victory in Australia, following successes in 2018-19 and 2020-21. India recorded wins by a margin of 2-1 in their last two series.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are guaranteed selections, while Mohammed Shami is undergoing rehabilitation. Prasidh Krishna, who made his debut in South Africa, is injury-prone. Umran can deliver impactful spells, considering his ability to bowl at 150 kph.
Fast Bowlers Will Be Getting A Retainer – Report
Additional fast-bowling contracts will be extended, offering access to the National Cricket Academy. The financial specifics are currently under discussion, but the players will receive a retainer. Cricketers in the lowest tier of national retainership receive Rs 1 crore.
“The financial details are being worked out. But they will be getting a retainer too,” the BCCI official added.
“The move is aimed at building a targeted fast bowling bench. They will receive insurance benefits and get access to NCA training facilities like contracted players,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently told HT.
Akash Deep is poised to be placed in Grade C if he participates in two more Tests. Akash Deep delivered a noteworthy debut against England in Ranchi. Vijaykumar Vyshak, Vidwath Kaverappa, and Yash Dayal haven’t made their debuts for India in international cricket.
