India and South Africa locked horns with each other in the first match of the two-game series at the Supersport Park in Centurion. It was the Proteas team that emerged victorious and bagged important World Test Championship points.

India were put into bat first and it was a horrendous outing for them with the bat. Skipper Rohit Sharma (5) fell early and it opened the gates for further wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal (17) tried to get going but couldn’t as he too perished soon.

Shubman Gill got out down the leg side and after that, Virat Kohli (38) and Shreyas Iyer (31) steadied the innings. The duo added vital partnership but got out in quick succession of time. After that, KL Rahul (101) slammed a magnificent ton and took his team to a total of 245 runs. for South Africa, Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers as he bagged five wickets.

South Africa in their reply didn’t have a great start as they also lost a wicket early in Aiden Markram (5), Tony de Zorzi (28), and Keegan Petersen (2). But then it was all about Dean Elgar (185) who played a sensational innings and outplayed India out of the game. He was supported well by David Bedingham (56) and Marco Jansen (84*).

Based on the solid batting performance, South Africa posted a total of 408 runs on the board. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers for India as he bagged a four-wicket haul and was the only impressive bowler from his side.

It was an outing to forget for India in the second innings. They had a torrid outing with the bat and their wickets fell like a pack of cards. Skipper Rohit Sharma went early for a duck and it triggered the collapse with Jaiswal (5) perishing soon.

Shubman Gill showed some resilience and scored 26 runs but couldn’t convert the start he got. After his wicket, Virat Kohli (76) held the one end and played magnificently. But he didn’t get the desired support as at the other end, wickets fell like a pack of cards.

Nandre Burger picked four wickets whereas Marco Jansen bagged three scalps as South Africa bundled out India for just 131 runs to win the game by a massive margin of an innings and 32 runs. They take a 1-0 lead in the series and India’s dream to win the series in South Africa got diminished.

After India vs South Africa 1st Test, Proteas bagged the top spot. India were dropped to the 5th spot after the massive loss. Pakistan are second on the ICC World Test Championship Points Table with New Zealand and Bangladesh next on the list.

Australia are 6th on the table and might go up as they are on the verge of winning the Test against Pakistan. West Indies, England, and Sri Lanka are next on the table.
