England defeated Pakistan in the first Test of the ongoing three-match series at home, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. Pakistan is virtually out of the race for the final of the World Test Championship with its disappointing performance in the ongoing WTC cycle.

The England team, led by Ollie Pope, began the red ball series in Pakistan with a stunning victory. They secured a victory in the match despite conceding 556 runs to Pakistan in the first innings. The Three Lions registered a comfortable innings and 47 runs victory in Multan on Friday, October 11.

Jack Leach Took Three Wickets On Day 5 Of Multan Test

Pakistan was aiming for a draw on the final day of the Test. Aamer Jamal and Agha Salman added a 109-run partnership for the seventh wicket in the second innings. The duo managed to frustrate the English bowlers early on before left-arm spinner Jack Leach got rid of Salman in the first session.

Leach trapped Salman in front of the stumps for 63. The veteran England spinner took more wickets of Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah to wrap up the Pakistan batting line-up. England took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after securing the memorable victory during the first Test match.

Updated ICC World Test Championship Points Table Revealed

The England team remains in fourth place in the WTC standings despite the victory against Pakistan. England has secured seven wins out of 17 matches in the WTC cycle. On the other hand, the Shan Masood-led team, which is at the bottom of the table, has been knocked out of the race for the final.

Team India is at the top of the World Test Championship standings with a Points Percentage (PCT) of 74.24. Defending champions Australia are in second place with a Points Percentage of 62.50. Sri Lanka, who has the chance to reach the WTC final for the first time, is in third place with a PCT of 55.56.

(In the ICC WTC 2023-2025, teams will get 12 points for a win, 4 for a draw, and 6 for a tie. For slow over-rates teams will lose one championship point for each over-short. Teams will be ranked on the percentage of points won.)

The second Test between England and Pakistan is scheduled to be played at the same venue in Multan, starting on Tuesday, October 15. India, led by Rohit Sharma, will take on New Zealand in the first Test of the upcoming three-match series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru from October 16.
