Team India's chances of reaching the third successive World Test Championship (WTC) final are alive after securing the victory in the first Test match against Australia. The Indian cricket team, led by Jasprit Bumrah, secured the victory by 295 runs at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Monday, November 25.

The Australia team resumed the fourth day's play at 12-3 with Usman Khawaja (3) and Steve Smith (0) at the crease. Usman Khawaja was dismissed without adding to his overnight tally. Meanwhile, Smith managed to score 17 runs off 60 before being dismissed by Mohammed Siraj in the first session.

Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) showed some resistance but fell short of their respective milestones. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took three wickets each, while Washington Sundar bagged two. Debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy removed Mitchell Marsh to get his maiden Test wicket.

Updated ICC World Test Championship Points Table (WTC Table) After IND vs AUS 1st Test 2024 Revealed

Following the victory against Australia, India's points percentage (PCT) in the World Test Championship table increased from 58.33 to 61.11. Meanwhile, the Pat Cummins-led team's PCT decreased to 57.69 from 62.50. The two teams will play four more Tests in the series, which will be crucial for them to finish in the top two in the WTC table.

It is worth mentioning that the Indian cricket team advanced to the finals in the first two editions of the World Test Championship. However, they failed to secure the title in both final matches. Australia, who reached the final in the 2023 edition, defeated India to win their first World Test Championship title under Pat Cummins' captaincy.

(In the ICC WTC 2023-2025, teams will get 12 points for a win, 4 for a draw, and 6 for a tie. For slow over-rates teams will lose one championship point for each over-short. Teams will be ranked on the percentage of points won.)

Second Test Between India And Australia To Commence On December 6

The second Test, a day-night match, between India and Australia will take place at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide, starting on December 6. On the other hand, South Africa will host the two-match series against Sri Lanka, with the first match scheduled to be played at Kingsmead in Durban on November 27.
