The United States of America (USA) broke the record for the lowest total successfully defended in a full men's ODI, surpassing India's previous record from 1985. In a low-scoring yet dramatic match, the United States of America cricket team managed to defend a modest total against Oman in their Cricket World Cup League 2 fixture.

Oman suffered a 57-run loss in the Cricket World Cup League 2 match at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground on Tuesday, February 18. The United States of America were bowled out for 122 runs—their lowest-ever total in men's international cricket. However, their bowlers turned the game around by dismissing the hosts for just 65.

USA Breaks India's Record by Defending the Lowest Total in Men's ODIs

This is now the lowest total ever defended in a full-length men's ODI without any reductions in overs or target adjustments. The previous record was held by India, who defended 125 against Pakistan in the Rothmans Four-Nations Cup in 1985. The Men in Blue won that match by 38 runs in Sharjah.

In this new record-breaking fixture, the combined 187 runs between the United States of America and Oman became the second-lowest aggregate in a full men's ODI where both teams were bowled out. The lowest is the ODI between India and Bangladesh in 2014, which had a combined total of 163 runs across 41 overs.

Oman Bowled Out for 65 While Chasing 123

Oman captain Jatinder Singh won the toss and opted to field first on a spin-friendly pitch. To take advantage of the conditions, he opened the bowling with spinner Shakeel Ahmed. Oman continued with an all-spin attack, using Jay Odedra, Aamir Kaleem, Samay Shrivastav, and Siddharth Bukkapatnam.

Oman bowled out the USA for just 122 runs in 35.3 overs. Milind Kumar was the lone bright spot for the United States of America, scoring an unbeaten 47 off 82 balls. Shakeel Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers for Oman, registering figures of 3/20 in 8.3 overs.

However, the USA bowled Oman out for just 65 runs in 25.3 overs. The American side also relied entirely on spin. Left-arm bowler Nosthush Kenjige took a five-wicket haul in 7.3 overs. The USA also used spinners Harmeet Singh and Yasir Mohammad to run through Oman's batting lineup.

Fast Bowlers Did Not Bowl a Single Delivery in 4,671 ODIs

It became the first game in men's ODI cricket after 4,671 matches without a single ball bowled by a fast bowler. The 19 wickets taken by spinners in the USA-Oman match also equaled the record for the most wickets by spin in an ODI, matching the Bangladesh-Pakistan game in Chattogram in 2011.
