Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's tough run continued in India A's crucial one-day tri-series match against Afghanistan A in Dambulla on Wednesday (June 17). The teenage sensation looked in good touch but once again failed to turn his start into a big innings on his maiden India A tour.

The teenage opener had luck on his side against Afghanistan A, but he could not make the most of it when India A needed him the most in their must-win clash of the one-day tri-series at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla.

Afghanistan bowler Faridoon Dawoodzai's finger-on-lips celebration leaves Vaibhav Sooryavanshi furious

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed by the Afghanistan pacer Faridoon Dawoodzai in Dambulla. Dawoodzai sent a sharp short ball, and Sooryavanshi tried to play a hook shot but got a top edge, and Khalid Taniwal completed a brilliant catch at point at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. Amid this, BCCI sent special message to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

After taking the big wicket, Dawoodzai celebrated with a finger-on-lips gesture, leading Vaibhav to react. He stared back at the Afghanistan bowler intensely and made hand gesture. At the same time, Vaibhav looked disappointed as he walked back to the pavilion after scoring 38 runs off 28 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Afghanistan A keep giving chances, but Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fails to cash in

Earlier, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi got several chances during his innings. He survived an early scare on 1, then got another lifeline when a catch was dropped on 8. Afghanistan A gave him two more opportunities on 25 and 37 during the crucial match on Wednesday.

With so many errors from Afghanistan A, it looked like the cricket gods were giving Sooryavanshi a golden chance to play a big match-winning knock. Sadly, the teenager eventually played a loose shot and was caught for 38 in a crucial do-or-die game for India A after getting four lifelines.

The dismissal added to a frustrating one-day tri-series campaign for the highly rated youngster. His scores in the tournament now read 14, 44, 21, and 38. Vaibhav looked aggressive and fearless at the crease, but his inability to convert starts into a big score has left everyone disappointed.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faces criticism as Tri-Series struggles continue

Following another flop show, many Indian cricket fans called Vaibhav a ‘slogger’ and slammed him for not adjusting to the 50-over format after dominating the IPL 2026. Some showed sympathy with the Bihar lad, mentioning the controversy against Sri Lanka A played in his mind.

Notably, Priyansh Arya managed to hit a fifty as India A’s current score reads 129/2, with captain Tilak Varma (2*) and vice-captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (30*) joining hands to take the innings deep against Afghanistan A in their must-win clash of the ongoing one-day tri-series in Dambulla.
