Former PBKS all-rounder Irfan Pathan has urged the Indian selectors to hand young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his India cap, following the strong display of character as the RR youngster smacked Jasprit Bumrah for colossal sixes during their IPL 2026 encounter.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is not the first among the number of prodigies cricket has ever witnessed; however, his talent is one of a kind. No player before had shown the ability and the courage to take down world-class senior cricketers with this ease and dominance.

Rajasthan Royals and Rahul Dravid probably hunted down two of India's biggest next-generation stars in Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Sooryavanshi's knock against the Mumbai Indians has pushed even more people to back him for a Team India call-up.

Irfan Pathan reveals Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was waiting for the Jasprit Bumrah moment

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan opined that selectors for the Senior Men's national cricket team should not keep Sooryavanshi waiting for his India cap. He then mentioned his immense praise for the young cricketer after he took down Bumrah in the last game against MI.

“Sooryavanshi is a destiny’s child," Pathan said. “What he is doing at 15 in white-ball cricket, I don’t think we have ever seen anyone do this.”

Sooryavanshi smashed the premier Indian pacer for a massive six on the very first ball of his very first over. Everyone, including Bumrah, was left shocked by the treatment from the young batter. As per Pathan, Sooryavanshi had been waiting for this moment for months, and he was ready to fire.

Pathan said the youngster had been specifically waiting for this moment. “This 15-year-old wonder kid says — I am waiting for Jasprit Bumrah. I got out to him last year. I will come this year and hit him. And he hit Bumrah on the very first ball.”

Irfan Pathan was impressed after Sooryavanshi's batting pushed Jasprit Bumrah to the edge

What impressed the all-rounder more was that young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had unsettled, probably one of the greatest white-ball bowlers India had ever witnessed. Sooryavanshi's six forced Bumrah to settle for slower deliveries.

“The way Bumrah had no plans visible, the way he moved to the slower one—Vaibhav Suryavanshi has forced even Bumrah to think. In white-ball cricket, India has not found a bowler like Bumrah. He is a GOAT. And this feat has been achieved against him,” claimed Pathan.

He next reflected on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's clear mindset, where he doesn't take bowlers into account by only focusing on playing the ball. This gives him the free license to dominate any bowler and hit them in any desired direction.

“Whatever bowler comes in front, he does not watch his action and does not think too much. He only watches the ball. If he gets it, he hits it. This thinking makes him very special,” he added.

"Give him the Indian team cap" - Irfan Pathan

A few months ago, he had asked a selector how much more time it would take for Sooryavanshi to find his way into the Indian team; however, he had not revealed any time for that. However, pointing towards Tuesday's performance, Pathan believes this is an answer to all questions.

“Don’t make this boy wait too long," he said. “Give him the Indian team cap. Imagine—this boy can play 20 years of professional cricket. This is scary for bowlers.”

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, now 15, is eligible to play for the Men's Senior team in international cricket. Pathan was also highly impressed by his discipline and his off-field manners, which were revealed to him by his coach.

“He told me this boy is very well-mannered. He comes and touches my feet wherever I am. The mind is in exactly the right place.”

“Very special," Pathan said. “It is unbelievable."
