Former India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could soon receive an ODI call-up, saying he would not be surprised if the youngster is picked for India's 50-over side.
Dasgupta's comments were made when the team is preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with multiple openers, including Rohit Sharma, in contention to represent the national cricket team in the elite tournament.
Will the Indian team management drop Rohit Sharma from the ODI team?
With the emergence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Rohit Sharma's future with the Indian National Cricket Team looks more insecure than before. Former Team India cricketer Deep Dasgupta believed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could replace Rohit Sharma in the future. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his Team India debut in the T20I series against England and featured in three ml consecutive matches.
The batter who made his name as one of the clean strikers of modern cricket previously did well in the 50-over format for the India A cricket team. He was equally effective in the longer format of the game as he is in the T20s.
Given the southpaw's potential across white-ball formats, the Indian team management could try to dig out Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's true potential by putting him in both T20I and ODI formats. If the management includes the 15-year-old batter in the ODI team, what will be Rohit Sharma's future, who is now 39?
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could make his debut in ODIs as well
Deep Dasgupta said that he would not be surprised if the management considers Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in place of Rohit Sharma, as the emerging batter is highly talented. The former cricketer pointed out that Vaibhav delivered under pressure during the knockout games.
"Listen, I won’t be surprised if that happens because he is a genius and an exceptional talent. Also, he has been largely successful. The best part is that he has been performing in knockouts. That just tells you more about his talent because he is ready to deliver under pressure. But again, he would also have to wait a little. He is a very special player, and it is just a matter of time," Deep Dasgupta expressed during an exclusive interview with RevSportz.
Deep Dasgupta raises concerns over Rohit Sharma's fitness
Dasgupta looked concerned about Rohit's fitness, mostly because of his age. As the former India captain is now 39, it is now challenging for him to keep himself fit for the long term. Deep mentioned that it would be very tough for the veteran opener to keep himself match-fit as he is active only in one format now.
"Let me preface it by saying that he is one of the greatest white-ball cricketers that we have seen. Secondly, he is not getting any younger. His class is obviously there, and he seems to be fit enough. But still 14- 15 months to go for the World Cup, so keeping himself match-fit and batting fit becomes very important since he is playing only one format now," the former cricketer turned commentator and cricket expert stated in the interview.
