Virat Kohli eyes breaking Sachin Tendulkar's 18-year-old record during IND vs SL 2nd ODI

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli is on the cusp of making history during the ongoing three-match ODI series against the Sri Lanka national cricket team. Virat Kohli has the opportunity to break Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s 18-year-old record and become the fastest player to reach 14,000 runs in ODI cricket.

Virat Kohli made his comeback during the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka after a break following the T20 World Cup 2024 victory. Kohli scored 24 runs off 32 balls before being dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga. He failed to convert the start into a big score during the 231-run chase in Colombo on August 2.

The Rohit Sharma-led team managed to score 230 runs in 47.5 overs, leading to a tie. The Indian team had the chance to secure a victory with just one run needed and two wickets in hand. Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka dismissed Shivam Dube and Arshdeep Singh on consecutive deliveries to bowl out India.

Virat Kohli On The Verge Of Breaking Sachin Tendulkar's Record

Virat Kohli is just 128 runs away from breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record for the fastest to reach 14,000 ODI runs. Tendulkar set the record in 350 innings during an ODI against Pakistan in Peshawar in 2006. Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara reached the milestone of 378 innings during the 2015 ODI World Cup.

The 35-year-old made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in August 2008 and is considered one of the greatest number three batsmen in the format. Kohli is the third-highest run-scorer in ODI history, having scored 13,872 runs in 293 ODIs. Kohli boasts an average of 58.53 and 50 centuries to his name.

Most Runs In ODI Cricket

The Delhi-born cricketer has a strong record against Sri Lanka. He has scored 2,618 runs in 54 ODIs at an average of 62.33, including 10 centuries and 12 fifties, with a best score of 166*. Overall, he has amassed 4,042 runs in 72 international matches at an average of 64.15, with 15 centuries and 18 fifties.

The second ODI between India and Sri Lanka will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 4, Sunday. The Men in Blue will be hoping to regain their winning momentum after a tie in the first match. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, is eager to register their first win in the ongoing white-ball tour.
