Former India all-rounder and World Cup winner Madan Lal has urged Virat Kohli to reconsider his retirement from Test cricket during the ongoing five-match Test series against England. His comments came after India’s defeat in the third Test at Lord’s, which left them 1-2 behind in the series.
India had a chance to go 2-1 up in the Test series but missed the opportunity after failing to chase a 193-run target in the fourth innings at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Virat Kohli had announced his retirement from Test cricket just a month before the England tour, ending an illustrious red-ball career.
Virat Kohli Should Reverse His Retirement - Madan Lal
Madan Lal emphasized that there’s no shame in returning from retirement. Lal said that Virat Kohli still has a couple of years of red-ball cricket left in him. He added that the veteran batter should return and share his experience with the younger players.
"Virat Kohli's passion for Indian cricket was unmatched. It's my wish that he should come back to Test cricket after retirement. There's nothing wrong with returning. If not in this series, he should make a comeback in the next,” Madan Lal told CricketPredicta.
"From my point of view, he should reverse his retirement. Because he can easily play for 1-2 years. It's about you passing your experience to the youngsters. You just left it. It's not too late. Please come back," he added.
Virat Kohli Had a Disappointing Outing in BGT 2024-25
Virat Kohli had a disappointing outing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He scored 190 runs in 9 innings at an average of 23.75, including one century. Kohli ended his career as India’s fourth-highest Test run-scorer, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 31 centuries and 31 fifties.
His absence left a void at No. 4 in India’s batting order ahead of the England series. However, new captain Shubman Gill has impressed with his performances. The 25-year-old scored 147 in the first Test at Leeds, although India lost the match.
Gill then followed up with scores of 269 and 161 in the second Test at Edgbaston. However, he had a modest outing in the third Test. Despite that, he remains the leading run-scorer in the series with 607 runs at an average of 101.17.
Shubman Gill Did Not Look as Technically Tight - Michael Vaughan
Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that England raised their game after tensions escalated on the third evening. He added that Shubman Gill appeared technically unsettled during his second innings.
"When things got spicy on the third evening, I felt that it brought the best out of England for the remainder of the game. Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight or calm as usual when he came out to bat on the fourth evening, but his team fought so hard on Monday in a fabulous Test," said Vaughan in his column in 'The Telegraph'.
Gill managed only 16 and 6 runs in his two innings, as India narrowly lost the Test by 22 runs despite an effort from Ravindra Jadeja and the lower order.
