Virat Kohli hints at making daughter Vamika a cricketer after India's World Cup win

India secured a victory over South Africa in the Women’s World Cup final, sparking celebrations across social media. Former India skipper Virat Kohli shared a heartfelt message congratulating the team after they clinched their first-ever ODI World Cup title at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

India clinched the Women’s World Cup title with a 52-run win over South Africa. Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma delivered all-round performances in the summit clash. India joined the elite group of World Cup winners, becoming only the fourth side to lift the trophy after Australia, England, and New Zealand.

India entered the tournament without being seen as one of the favourites, and their chances looked even slimmer after three successive losses. The team defeated T20 champions New Zealand to reach the semifinals and then stunned seven-time winners Australia to enter the final.

In the title clash, Shafali Verma scored 87 runs off 78 balls, including seven boundaries and two sixes. Shafali added a 104-run stand with Smriti Mandhana, who scored 45 off 58, to set the tone. India posted 298/7 in 50 overs, the second-highest score in Women’s World Cup history.

With the ball, Shafali and Deepti shared seven wickets. Deepti took a five-wicket haul as South Africa were bowled out for 246 runs in 45.3 overs. Shafali was named 'Player of the Match' while Deepti was awarded 'Player of the Tournament'.

Virat Kohli shared an emotional message on Instagram after India’s Women’s World Cup triumph. He expressed immense pride in the team’s achievement, adding that the win would inspire countless young girls across India to pursue cricket.

“The girls have created history and I couldn’t be more proud as an Indian to see the hard work of so many years come to life finally. They deserve all the applause and a big congratulations to Harman and the whole team for achieving this historic feat," Virat Kohli wrote.

"Also congratulations to the whole squad and the management for the work behind the scenes. Well done india. Enjoy the moment to the fullest. This will inspire generations of girls to take up the sport in our country. Jai hind,” Virat Kohli added.

We Wanted to Break the Barrier - Harmanpreet Kaur

India had waited for the ICC trophy for nearly two decades. After falling short in the 2005 and 2017 ODI World Cup finals, as well as the 2020 T20 World Cup title clash, the women’s team finally broke the cycle of heartbreak under the lights of the DY Patil Stadium.

During the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet Kaur said that India’s World Cup triumph is only the beginning for the team. Kaur added that the group is determined to make winning a habit with major tournaments lined up in the coming years.

"This is the start, we wanted to break the barrier, and now our next plan is to make it a habit. We were waiting for this moment; now the moment has come. Next year also there is a World Cup and then the Champions Trophy, so many big events coming up and we just want to keep improving every day, just want to keep giving our best." Kaur said.
