Former Team India skipper Virat Kohli opened up about the ongoing debate over senior players participating in domestic cricket to remain in the scheme of things for the 2027 World Cup. The batter hinted that he does not fully agree with the idea that playing domestic cricket should be a requirement for selection.
Virat Kohli was instrumental in India’s 17-run victory during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30. He scored his 52nd hundred in the format, smashing 135 off 120 balls. The right-handed batter became the player with the most number of international centuries in a single format.
I’ve Never Been a Big Believer in a Lot of Preparation - Virat Kohli
With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from T20Is and Tests, they now feature only in ODI cricket. India have limited one-day matches in the near future, and the next World Cup is still far away. The selectors are concerned about whether the senior batters will get enough match practice to stay fit and sharp.
Notably, the BCCI is reportedly keen on having both players participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. Kohli shared his perspective during the post-match interaction. Kohli said that he has never relied heavily on long or extensive preparation.
“I’ve never been a big believer in a lot of preparation, if that makes sense. All my cricket has been mental. As long as I feel good mentally, I can play the game," Kohli told the broadcasters on Sunday.
I Work Physically Very Hard Every Day of My Life - Virat Kohli
Kohli also spoke about how he manages his fitness while spending time abroad. He stated that physical training has become a daily routine for him, and his focus remains on staying mentally sharp and physically prepared.
“I work physically very hard every day of my life. It’s got nothing to do with cricket anymore. It’s the way I live. So as long as my fitness levels are up and my mental enjoyment and sharpness is there, when you can visualize the game and see yourself running as hard, reacting fast on the ball, you know it’s fine,” Kohli added.
If There’s a Dip in Form, You Look for Games - Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli mentioned that he knows exactly what his body needs after playing more than 300 ODIs and over 15 years of international cricket. Kohli stated that seeking extra match time only becomes necessary when a player struggles with form, adding that he does not need constant games to stay at his best.
“I’ve played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket over the last 15-16 years. If you can bat an hour and a half, two hours in the nets without taking a break, you’re meeting all the markers. I understand if there’s a dip in form, you look for games and try to get that form back,” Kohli said.
According to the Times of India, Kohli has agreed to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. After the South Africa series ends, he is expected to return to London but will rejoin the Delhi team in Bengaluru for a few matches before coming back to the Indian squad for the home series against New Zealand in January.
