Virat Kohli will play in India for the first time since the IPL
Indian legend Virat Kohli was last seen in action the previous month, when India toured Australia for a three-match ODI series against the nation. He registered back-to-back ducks in the first two games of the series and then bounced back with an unbeaten century that guided them to a victory.
He, alongside former captain Rohit Sharma, is among the two players who have been trying to keep their spot in the Indian ODI team with their aim to represent India in the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup to be hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
The South Africa ODIs will be the first time since the IPL 2025 that Kohli returns to India for competitive cricket. This will be his return to international cricket in India after almost 10 months, as the last time he played was back in January against England.
Virat Kohli's U-19 teammate urges for his return to Test cricket
Kohli announced his retirement from T20Is, but what affected all was his sudden announcement of Test retirement at the start of his WTC cycle. Kohli's U19 teammate Shreevats Goswami believes that he has retired from the wrong format.
"Ideally, Virat should have left playing ODIs & continued playing test cricket until he had nothing to give. Test cricket misses him. Not just as a player but just the energy he brought, the love & passion for playing for India, where he made the team believe that they can win in any condition," Goswami wrote on X.
