Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma roles to change for IND vs AUS Tests? Former legend drops bombshell

Former Australia cricketer Ian Chappell has suggested new roles for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Chappell feels that both the senior players will have to act as guiding lights for the youngsters in the team.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be played later this year. It will be a huge series for Australia and India, and a number of Indian youngsters will be in focus.

Talented youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Akash Deep will tour Australia for the first time if they get selected in the squad. All the eyes will be on Jaiswal, who has had a fantastic start to his Test career. It remains to be seen how he performs on Australian pitches.

Ian Chappell wants Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to perform these roles in BGT 2024-25

While writing for his column in ESPNCricinfo, Ian Chappell felt that Yashasvi Jaiswal will need to prove himself in Australia despite a great start to his Test career. He also suggested different roles for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in this series.

"Yashasvi Jaiswal appears to be a very talented young batter, but he needs to demonstrate good form in Australia. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should act as guiding lights for the younger players on the tour," Chappell wrote in his column.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has played 10 Tests so far and scored 1094 runs at an average of 64.35 with 3 hundreds and 5 fifties. The opener has been terrific at the top order and can potentially score big runs in the future.

During India's previous series against England at home, Jaiswal had a breakthrough series as he scored 712 runs at a blistering average of 89 with 2 hundreds and 3 fifties. He scored his runs at a stunning strike rate of 79.91. In the Chennai Test match against Bangladesh, he scored a valuable fifty in the first innings.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's numbers in Australia

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the most experienced players for India currently. Both have toured Australia on plenty of occasions and know what it takes to win there.

In Australia, Rohit has scored 408 runs in 14 innings at an average of 31.38 with three fifties. On the other hand, Virat Kohli has terrific numbers in Australia and enjoys batting there. Kohli has scored 1352 runs in 13 matches at an average of 54.08 in Australian conditions. He has scored 6 hundreds and 4 fifties there.

Being the senior players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have a part of both Test series wins and losses against Australia. In the upcoming series, both will be expected to share their experience with these youngsters to topple a high-quality Australian team in their conditions.

The five-match Test series between Australia and India will begin on November 22 in Perth. The next four Tests will be played in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney respectively.
