Former Team India skipper Virat Kohli has opened up about his preparation and mindset ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. The right-handed batter stated that whenever he makes himself available to play, he ensures he is at full capacity and never enters a series below his best.

Kohli struggled on his return to international cricket in the ODI series against Australia. He registered ducks in the first two matches but bounced back in the final game with a match-winning knock of 74. There is optimism that Kohli can carry forward the momentum he rediscovered in that last outing.

I Arrive at My 100% Capacity - Virat Kohli

“You get stronger mentally and physically by putting in the work. It’s a constant process in every day of your life. It’s not just related to cricket," Virat Kohli said.

"I’ve been very sure of the fact that once I make myself available to play, I arrive at my 100% capacity. That’s how I’ve always played my cricket. I’ve never arrived at a series or a tournament at even 95%," he added.

"I think experience is an accumulation of you being present and aware in the situations you’ve been a part of and then having all those memories stored up so that you can utilize them when similar situations arise again."

Something That Helps You Keep Your Hard Work Consistent - Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli said that staying mentally balanced helps him remain consistent with his training and effort. Kohli added that players learn that results come from hard work, not the other way around.

"I think being in a balanced place is something that helps you keep your hard work consistent. And I think that's the key to playing for a long period of time — that regardless of the results, your work, your effort, your commitment do not change," Kohli opined.

"That's why, after playing for 10-15 years, you become wiser. You understand that your routines cannot depend on results. Results are a by-product of the hard work, and not the other way around."

It Doesn’t Matter Whether You’re 38 or 28 - Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma said that age does not change his hunger to play for India, as the desire to perform remains the same throughout his career. He stated that ODI cricket demands a mix of Test-match discipline and T20 aggression, especially for an opening batter who faces the swinging new ball.

“Every time you come out and represent your country, the drive and willingness is always there. So it doesn’t matter whether you’re 38 or 28,” Rohit said.

“ODI cricket is a mixture of Test and T20 put together. You need to be skillful enough to handle both skill sets. Especially for me, because I open the batting when the ball is nice and new,” he added.

“I know the ball swings, so you need to bring your Test cricket mindset in there—try to leave the ball as much as you can and play close to the body.”
