India National Cricket Team batter Virat Kohli might return to captain the Test team again. As per reports, it is learned that the premier batter wants to lead the team during the transition phase in the longest format of the game.
It is learned that Virat Kohli has expressed his desire to play till 2027 and wants to be the interim captain of the team during the transition phase, as per journalist Ankan Kar. But it isn't clear if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will accept his demand or not, especially with him stepping down from his position a few years back.
Rohit Sharma's struggles as captain fuel debate for new captain
This hasn't happened in Indian cricket so far when a player who has left the captaincy was appointed again. But it could well be the case for Virat Kohli as his impact as a leader on the team was nothing short of exceptional, and also, there isn't any captaincy candidate.
Jasprit Bumrah is currently the vice-captain of the team, and he no doubt has done a brilliant job. But making him skipper would mean that he will have to play every game, and with the amount of cricket that India play, it will take a lot out of him, and it increases the chances of him getting injured.
Hence, with the team in a transition phase and also no clarity over the future of Rohit Sharma, there are chances that BCCI might accept the demand of Virat Kohli. This can come into consideration, especially with the team struggling to get going in Test cricket in the last few months.

"V Kohli aspires to be interim TEST CAPTAIN for transition phase, & desires to play till 2027."🤯
~ Indian Express quotes Gambhir (in Dressing Room):

Senior Indian player believes that he can be the ‘Mr Fix-It’ and help the team in this phase
There was also a report in Indian Express which also suggested the same. Although the news didn't reveal the name, they stated that one of the senior players in the team was ready to take the captaincy. He believes that he can be the ‘Mr Fix-It’ and help the team in this phase.
The reports added that the senior player of the India National Cricket Team isn't convinced that young players in the team are ready to take over leadership roles. Hence he wants to ensure that the team goes well through the transition phase, which is currently on.
Virat Kohli was the main reason behind the turnaround of the team
If this happens, it will be a massive step going forward for Indian cricket. It's fair to say that the batter was the main reason behind the turnaround of the team. He brought a fearless approach to the team, and it was only under him that the team started winning the overseas Tests.
But in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Virat Kohli hasn't been at his best. He slammed a century in Perth and, after that, hasn't scored runs. He has been getting out to the balls outside off and has bagged low scores in the last three matches of the series.
