Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag drew comparisons between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam ahead of the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. Virender Sehwag emphasized that Virat Kohli will score more runs than Babar Azam in the marquee tournament in India.
Virat Kohli is currently gearing up for his fourth appearance in the ODI World Cup. The right-handed batter was part of India’s victorious campaign in 2011 on home soil. He captained the Indian team in the 2019 edition, but they failed to reach the final in England.
Feels Like Virat Kohli Is 20 Years Old – Virender Sehwag
In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag praised Babar Azam’s batting abilities and acknowledged his potential to score more runs. However, Sehwag emphasized that what sets Virat Kohli apart is his hunger to score runs.
“Babar Azam is a good player; he can score big runs. I feel that the hunger I see in Virat Kohli is not visible in anyone else. Even today, he plays with the same passion and attitude,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
“When he steps onto the ground, it seems to me like he’s not 34 years old; it feels like he’s 20 or 22 years old, entering the field with energy. And within him is the belief that this is my World Cup, and I have to prove myself because he might not play the next World Cup.”
In the 2019 World Cup, Babar scored 474 runs in eight innings at an average of 67.71 with a strike rate of 87.78. Meanwhile, Virat scored 443 runs in nine innings, averaging 55.38 with a strike rate of 94.06.
Babar Azam Is A Good Player – Virender Sehwag
The 44-year-old emphasized that Pakistan is heavily dependent on Babar Azam, which could add pressure on him. Sehwag said that the Indian team has multiple players capable of providing support to Virat Kohli.
“Babar Azam is a good player. However, the thing is that his team depends on him. The Indian team doesn’t depend on Virat Kohli alone; there are other batsmen who can provide support. When a team relies heavily on one player, there’s more pressure on that player, and their performance doesn’t come out as polished,” Sehwag concluded.
Pakistan will kick off their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on October 6. India will take on Australia in their first match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8.
