Former South Africa National Cricket Team batter Herschelle Gibbs has made a bold statement on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after their Test retirements. He rated the opening batter more technically sound than Kohli, who is rated as the best batter of the current generation.
The India National Cricket Team saw the end of an era after both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirements from Test cricket. It was the opening batter first, who made the decision public through an Instagram post, and then five days later, Kohli joined too.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket ahead of the series against England
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket ahead of the series against the England National Cricket Team. This came as a shock because both the batters expressed their desire to do well in the five-match Test series against the Ben Stokes-led side.
After their retirements, one of the Twitter users posted two contrasting videos of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on how they react to the turning ball. The user highlighted that the opening batter tries different kinds of shots every time, while Kohli sticks to one shot. He said:
"This is the real difference between them, Kohli tries to play the same type of shot every time even if he gets out doing it He doesn't elevate his game But Rohit literally tries different kinds of shots every time, even in his worst form. Kohli doesn't have that ability to adapt, but Rohit does that's why Rohit has succeeded in playing fine Test cricket even after his mid-30s"
Reacting to this, Herschelle Gibbs pointed out that it's not up to the batters but the batting coach to give more options to score, no matter who the batter is. He said:
"It’s up to the batting coach to give him more options to score no matter who the batter is.. thank me later."
Rohit was always more technically correct than Virat - Herschelle Gibbs
After that, one of the users asked Herschelle Gibbs about who among Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is technically correct. Replying to this, the former South Africa National Cricket Team player said:
"Rohit was always more technically correct than Virat, but Virat's desire to dominate, especially in white ball format, is a major difference between the 2 batters."
You ever see Rohit defend balls on the 4th or 5th stump ? - Herschelle Gibbs
Then, another user lashed out at Herschelle Gibbs, saying that he doesn't agree with him as Virat Kohli is technically better than Rohit Sharma, who changed his batting position a lot of times. He said:
"I disagree with u on that ... Virat technically is much better as compared to Rohit ... Remember, Rohit has been shifted up and down quite a lot ... Even today I'm not sure of which position he was comfortable to bat in Tests."
Herschelle Gibbs then gave a befitting reply to the fan, saying that Rohit Sharma hardly defended balls on the 4th or 5th stump, rating him better than Virat Kohli. He added:
"You ever see Rohit defend balls on the 4th or 5th stump ? How many times did Virat get out doing just that ? Rohit definitely technically better than virat."
