Virat Kohli's former teammate Abhinav Mukund has made a shocking revelation on the nature and attitude of the legendary cricketer. Both were part of India's U-19 campaign and have remained in touch despite the careers of the two players reaching different altitudes.
Virat Kohli is currently the second-highest run-getter in the ODI format as well as all formats combined in international cricket. The batter made an international comeback in the ODI format with the Australia series, which India lost 2-1. Kohli scored 74 runs in the series, with two ducks in the first two games.
Virat Kohli's competitive nature revealed by a former U-19 teammate
Former Indian batter Abhinav Mukund, who played alongside Virat Kohli in the 2008 U-19 World Cup, has made a stunning revelation about Kohli's incredible determination, grit, and competitive spirit in the game. Kohli had led the Indian side to a win in that World Cup, and he himself averaged 47 at a strike rate of 94.75.
The tournament had then set the tone for a stunning career for Virat Kohli, who went on to emerge as one of the greatest of all-time cricketers in international cricket.
"I always felt that he was meant for bigger things. He was so driven as a person and as a cricketer. And he would want to be the best at everything. Anything he does. Even drinking this coffee or something like that, right? He'd be like, "Okay, I drink this better than you." And that's the sort of person that he was," said the former Indian U-19 star in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo.
"Will he be able to sustain this in international cricket?" - Abhinav Mukund
Shedding further light on the attitude and approach of the great Indian cricketer since his teenage days, Mukund revealed that he feared whether Kohli could sustain himself in international cricket due to his aggressive nature.
"Virat was always very instinctive and aggressive. He was ultra-aggressive even back then. And he would go on to the field to win. Personally, I always [wondered]: will he be able to sustain this in international cricket? Because he was so wound up all the time. He was very aggressive. I always believed that he would play to win, and he would actually put on a game face," he added.
Soon after the 2008 U-19 World Cup, Virat Kohli went on to make his Indian debut in an ODI series in Sri Lanka against the neighboring rivals.
Virat Kohli was actively part of the U-19 Group during Covid
The former U-19 teammate of the Indian legend, Abhinav Mukund, further revealed that Kohli actively participated in the U-19 2008 Squad WhatsApp group during the COVID-19 pandemic. Though he could not be sure about whether Virat Kohli would still continue to be a part of the group.
"Captain [Kohli] was part of it. He used to be active [on the group] during Covid. I don't know if he's part of it still. But yeah, we keep in touch whenever someone achieves something. Like, two of the boys became umpires. Saurabh Tiwary became a member of JSCA [Jharkhand cricket association]. All of these events are sort of catalogued, and you just congratulate them. Wishing a happy birthday, " said Mukund.
