Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli is expected to be included in the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia in away conditions. The right-handed batter is a no-brainer for the number 3 position in the lineup, considering his performances in international cricket, especially ODIs.

According to PTI, the selectors are expected to meet on Saturday, October 4, in Ahmedabad, during the third day of the ongoing first Test against the West Indies, to finalize the squads for the Australia series. Cricbuzz has also reported that the official announcement will likely be made on the same day.

I want Kohli to play. But "communication" is the key word. Just crosschecked," Juglan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Virat Kohli Has Been a Key Player for the Indian Team

Virat Kohli has been a key player of the Indian team. He has delivered match-winning performances whenever the team has needed him most. Kohli played a good knock in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final, where India ended their 11-year ICC title drought, before winning the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The batting icon last played for India in that Champions Trophy triumph in March. He will feature in his next international assignment during the upcoming ODI series in Australia, starting on October 19 in Perth, followed by matches in Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25.

Kohli has scored 14,181 runs in 302 ODIs at a staggering average of 57.88 and a strike rate of 93.34. He holds the record for the most centuries (51) in the format and is the only batter to cross the 50-hundred mark in ODIs.

The batter has scored 2,451 runs against Australia in 48 innings at an average of 54.46 and a strike rate of 93.69. At home, he has scored 1,483 runs in 29 matches at 57.03, while in Australia, he has added 802 runs in 18 matches at 47.17.

Virat Kohli Maintains Low Profile in UK, Staying Away from Social Media

The 36-year-old cricketer has been keeping a low profile in the UK, staying away from cricket and social media attention. He last played competitive cricket in the 2025 IPL, where he played a crucial role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) long-awaited maiden title triumph.

The former India captain emerged as RCB’s highest run-scorer with 657 runs in 15 innings at an average of 54.75. He finished as the third-leading run-getter of the season. He was emotional after the franchise’s historic win, as it meant a lot to him.

Kohli was expected to feature in the Test series against England, but the veteran shocked many by announcing his retirement from red-ball cricket in May. He is available for selection in international cricket only in the 50-over format.
