Shreyas Iyer once again proved why he is a true team player which left everyone in awe. Just three runs away from a well-deserved century, Shreyas Iyer made a bold call, allowing his teammate Shashank Singh to go for the big shots instead of playing it safe in the IPL 2025 clash.
Iyer, who was just three runs away from a century, stunned everyone by prioritizing the team’s target over his personal milestone, as many would have seized the opportunity to reach a personal milestone. His move paid off, as Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans by 11 runs in their IPL 2025 opener on March 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Vyshak Vijaykumar urges Virat Kohli to learn from Shreyas Iyer’s team-first approach
Now, Vyshak Vijaykumar has made a bold statement on Iyer’s heart-winning call. The Punjab Kings pacer has suggested his ex-RCB teammate Virat Kohli to take inspiration from Iyer’s selfless approach, as the Indian batting icon many times leans towards his personal milestone.
Vyshak Vijaykumar was quoted as saying by Times of India, “Not at all. He’s always been a selfless player. For him, it’s always ‘team first.’ People often talk about this mindset, but seeing it in action is truly inspiring. It serves as a great example for youngsters and even for players like us.”
Taking a dig at Virat Kohli, the PBKS star noted, “It doesn’t matter what level you're playing at—whether it's the IPL or any other competition—what matters is playing for the team. Personal milestones, like scoring a hundred, don’t mean as much as achieving the team’s target.”
The way Shashank Singh batted in the last over was incredible: Vyshak Vijaykumar
Vijaykumar, who witnessed the moment live, praised Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, calling it the kind of mindset that defines true champions. He emphasized that personal milestones are celebrated, but what truly matters is winning for the team.
Vyshak believes that such an attitude sets an example for youngsters, and even he lauded Shashank Singh for his brisk cameo of 44* runs off 16 balls against the Titans.
He signed off by saying, “I think that mentality made the difference in our victory. The way Shashank batted in the last over was incredible. He wasn’t very confident before the tournament started, but to step up and deliver in such a crucial moment was truly exceptional.”

Vyshak Vijaykumar impresses against Gujarat Titans
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer made a bold call, trusting Arshdeep Singh’s instincts and handing the ball to Vyshak Vijaykumar when Gujarat Titans needed 64 runs from the final four overs. After a brief discussion with both Shreyas Iyer and Arshdeep, Vyshak stepped up to the challenge.
The 28-year-old stuck to a well-planned strategy, focusing on wide yorkers to limit scoring opportunities. Despite starting with a couple of wides, he remained determined and kept bowling in the same tight areas. His disciplined approach frustrated Sherfane Rutherford.
Vyshak’s two overs were nothing short of game-changing, as he conceded just 10 runs and shifted the momentum in Punjab Kings’ favor. His calmness under pressure proved crucial, disrupting Gujarat Titans' chase. Despite their strong start, GT fell short by 11 runs, finishing at 232/5 in response to PBKS’ total of 243/5 in Ahmedabad.
