Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman highlighted the importance of reviews in a Test Match and noted how poor DRS calls might go on to become very costly in the end. India lost two of their reviews already with just one left ahead in the first innings at Lord’s and Virat Kohli has been under the scanner for it.

Kohli is one of the most animated characters on the field and he brings a lot of emotion into the face of the opponents. It can go wrong as well with the DRS calls being not used properly and it is true to say that India has been missing Dhoni who is very precise when it comes to using the reviews.

Mohammad Siraj and Rishabh Pant have been exciting to watch but their too much energy has also taken a toll on India losing reviews.

VVS Laxman Recalls The Headingly Game When Poor DRS Call Cost Australia

VVS Laxman mentioned the importance of reviews with the Ashes Test at Headingly when Ben Stokes had a big reprieve. Nathan Lyon and Australia went for an LBW review when clearly it was pitching outside the leg stump and Australia lost their only review through a bad decision.

It hurt them badly as they didn’t have a review when Ben Stokes was plumb in front and it changed the game in England’s favour.

“It is a very important element in Test match cricket. I still remember and will never ever forget the way Australia lost the Test match at Headingly.

“If they wouldn’t have taken that review of Nathan Lyon in which the ball was clearly pitching outside the leg stump and he wasted the review and immediately the next, over Stokes was plumb in front of the wicket and they couldn’t have eventually won the Test match,” VVS Laxman told to ESPN Cricinfo.

VVS Laxman Explains How DRS Reviews Should Be Taken

VVS Laxman felt that there have been suggestions from all ends which has confused the Indian skipper while taking reviews and he reckoned that the bowler shouldn’t be considered while taking reviews. He added the captain has to invest in two players who can be trusted like a bank when it comes to reviews and they should have a good view of the wicket too.

“I think taking that review and being very careful of how and when to use it is very critical. I just feel that it is very cluttered, everyone gathering together and I think it just adds to the confusion.

“Bowler is going to have the emotions, he feels that each and every ball if it is hitting the pad or inside edge, is a wicket. And, that is where the captain has to be very calm.”

“He has to have trust in a couple of people who have got a very clear vision of how the action is taking place and then take a composed and calm decision. You can’t be emotional when you are taking the reviews because this review can cost you a test match that we have seen in Headingly,” he added.

England is placed on 119 for the loss of 3 wickets at the end of day two and a lot will depend on Joe Root.
