Stephen Fleming became the head coach of the England National Cricket Team's Test setup at a very crucial juncture in his career. He lost his job at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after serving the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise for more than a decade ahead of the 2027 season.

Under his coaching, the Super Kings won five titles in the league, but Stephen Fleming's last few years with the franchise were not very successful. In consecutive seasons, the team Stephen coached, Chennai Super Kings, failed to qualify for the playoffs of the tournament.

A new chapter in Stephen Fleming's career

He was the head coach for the Super Kings' sister franchise in the SA20 league as well. Declining in both ways ultimately resulted in losing the lucrative job. Like the Chennai Super Kings, the England National Cricket Team's past few months were not very exciting, especially in the longest format of the game, under the guidance of Brendon McCullum.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) named Stephen Fleming in place of his predecessor, Brendon McCullum, another former New Zealand cricketer. Fleming's duty will be massive, pulling the Three Lions out of a slump as soon as possible with captain Joe Root.

Ahead of England's Test series against South Africa, Stephen Fleming said that it is an honour for him to join the England cricket team as their head coach in the longest format of the game.

"I think it's one of the most prestigious jobs in cricket. And that's the regard I hold it in. And to be asked to consider it and then be selected to do it is a great honour," he said.

Stephen Fleming wants to win The Ashes

The former New Zealand cricket team captain mentioned that there is a common factor between him and the England cricket team, that is defeating the Australia cricket team. As the coach, he wants to win the Ashes, defeating the arch-rivals Australia.

"No, because I have an obsession with it as well. New Zealand has an obsession with it. We love it. We want to beat Aussie. So we're heavily linked to England's performances. We have a deep desire to beat Australia in everything as the little cousin," he expressed when he was asked, 'Do you ever look at English cricket and think, wow, you guys are far too obsessed about the Ashes?'

"So to have that opportunity and be part of it, I can't wait. And I want to be my best self and have a team that represents itself in the best possible way. I've got a vision of that, and it's aspirational. It would be brilliant," Fleming added.

Stephen Fleming reveals his ultimate goal

England's men's Test team head coach also mentioned that his ultimate goal is to take the Three Lions at the helm of the Test cricket rankings.

“I would love to be in charge of the No.1 Test team in the world. That would be my aspiration," Fleming stated in an interview.
