Former batter Aakash Chopra picked a combined India-England XI based on player performances in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. All-rounder Washington Sundar, who impressed with both bat and ball during the England tour, did not make it into Chopra’s final lineup.
India drew the five-match Test series against England 2-2, clinching a narrow six-run victory in the final match at The Oval. Shubman Gill was the leading run-scorer with 754 runs in 10 innings, while Mohammed Siraj finished as the top wicket-taker with 23 wickets, including a 9/190 performance at The Oval.
Washington Sundar Omitted from India-England Combined XI
Aakash Chopra ignored Washington Sundar in his combined India-England XI after the recent series. Chopra opted for Ravindra Jadeja and Ben Stokes in the all-rounder roles. He mentioned Jadeja’s steady batting performances, even though his bowling was not up to the mark during the series.
“I was thinking about Washington Sundar also here, but I will have Ravindra Jadeja here, Jaddu has scored runs consistently. Of course, he hasn’t taken too many wickets. He got fewer opportunities to take wickets as well, and spin hasn’t done that well.” Chopra said.
Washington Sundar made valuable contributions with both bat and ball. Washington Sundar scored 284 runs in four Tests from the lower order at an impressive average of 47.33, including a century and a fifty. With the ball, he picked up seven wickets, including a match-turning 4/22 at Lord’s.
Ben Duckett Snubbed from India-England Combined XI
Aakash Chopra picked Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul as the openers in his combined India-England XI. Chopra named Joe Root and Shubman Gill at No. 3 and 4, respectively. He emphasized that Gill was the leading run-scorer of the series by a decent margin.
“Yashasvi, I felt, has done well. He scored hundreds in the first and last matches and had two half-centuries in between. He has scored more than 500 runs and batted extremely well,” Chopra said.
“Just like this team can’t be made without Joe Root, it can’t be made without Gill either. He has scored more than 750 runs. He is the highest run-scorer of the series, and by a considerable margin,” he added.
Rishabh Pant Picked as Wicketkeeper in India-England Combined XI
The cricketer-turned-commentator picked Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper-batter and Harry Brook at No. 6. Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja were chosen for their all-round abilities. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Josh Tongue were selected as the fast bowlers.
“My keeper-batter is, of course, Rishabh Pant, who bats even with a broken foot. He is someone who has been outstanding,” Chopra said.
“Ben Stokes He has been outstanding. If he had played the last match, the result might have been different. He has scored runs, but the highlight was his bowling,” he opined.
“Sometimes he is wayward, but he picks up wickets. I am going with pure wickets here,” Chopra remarked on Tongue’s inclusion.
Aakash Chopra’s combined XI: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Joe Root, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant (wk), Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Tongue.
